The Chargers also released defensive tackle Ian Scott, fullback Cory Jackson and wide receiver Jordyn Jackson on Monday.

In Charger Circles Cory Jackson was considered to be a major competitor for the limited RB Spots. The knock on Shawnbrey has been that he is too similar in skill set to Darren Sproles, while Jackson was a blocking fullback, which the Chargers really don't have.

I think this really improves Shawnbrey's odds of playing on Sundays this year.

I don't really see Shawnbrey McNeal and Darren Sproles as being that similar in skill sets.

McNeal is more of a slasher, a one-cut RB who would thrive in the old Denver (and I guess future Washington) rushing offense. Sproles reminds me more of Dante Hall, the former St. Louis and Kansas City RB/WR/KR who was called "The Human Joystick." The way he can start and stop and change directions is amazing.

Either way, it's good to see one fewer player standing in McNeal's path. Go get 'em, Shawnbrey!

In another note, the Cowboys has also made cuts and Mccann seemed to have cleared a hurdle aswell. Some sportswriters believe its for sure he'll make the team.

I was looking for that but didn't see any reports (not that I looked that deeply mind you).

I agree with you, and I imagine that the Chargers Coaches have a firm grip on it. I'm just talking about the view of the fans, who see that Shawnbrey is on the small side, and is slippery. It's superficial, but that's the fan's view.

Don't forget that the routes that Shawnbrey ran at SMU are made for a pro set and the many reps that he got catching the ball out of the backfield and on the fly during practice and in the games this past year made him very valuable in the new NFL Offensive game.

Any sportswriter who says that is just trying to sell papers. Proven veterans who are known starters ... fine, you can say they make the team for sure. To suggest in June that a rookie free agent will make the team "for sure" is just lazy speculation.

Of course, I hope whatever writer said that is dead-on, and if so, I'm going to get him to pick lottery numbers for me.

And I'm interested in your thoughts, ponyscott, about the routes McNeal ran that are "made for a pro set." I'm not challenging you here — I never played — but to the average fan like me, it seems that very little in the Run-and-Shoot playbook translates to the NFL. Can you educate me/us a little here? Thanks.

Get real!
Mgt meeting strategy: "we need to sell some papers!"
"ok....lets mention an SMU player to sell some papers"!
