"The Craig James Bowl"
SMU at Texas Tech, Sept. 5
Fans of the forward pass were denied a chance to see Mike Leach take on June Jones in a game in which the combined amount of passing attempts would have been in triple digits. The consolation prize will have to be SMU's game against like-minded Houston on Oct. 23. For now, part of the run-up of the game likely will center on Craig James. As a player, James was part of the "Pony Express" backfield with Eric Dickerson at SMU. Last season, James and his son, Adam, were at the center of the controversy that led to the end of Leach's tenure in Lubbock. Presumably, James will not serve as analyst for this game when it airs on ESPN.

Uhh didn't we play Tech in 08, Jones' first year and got drilled 48-7? I believe Bo-Levi had 4 or 5 ints in that game alone.

Why are we playing Tech on the road for our first game? I would much rather play a more winnable game at home to start the season. I do not oppose to playing a BCS team in non-conference every now and then but I think our piss-poor scheduing is one reason we have struggled to field winning teams. A non-conference schedule of Tech, TCU, Wash. St., and Navy do not give us any breaks. I just don't think this team is at the level it needs to be to have such a tough non-conference schedule. Why are we even playing Navy? Why schedule an option team that runs an offense no one usually sees and plays dirty with chop blocking? Is this part of a the top 25 agenda?

Maybe Sam Houston State School for the Blind has an opening.
Edit: Sorry Stallion, I had to steal it just this one time.

Nothing wrong playing these team. what's wrong is that we aren't recruiting at anywhere near the level of TCU or Tech right now. If we want a Top 25 team then we shouldn't be afraid of playing a couple of Top 50 teams. We are going to have to earn it.

Why not? They've got a new coach and when better to play them than right out of the shoot? It'll be a great test for our team. I think we've got a shot to win this one.

seriously though if the goal is BCS or best conference that qualifies for BCS Bowls-don't we have to show we belong some day?

Agree. When we start beating Tech / BCS teams, we will stop playing them as our first game -- they won't want to schedule us early.

It's better than the Safeway Bowl.

We should be playing Texas State again or Ark State, not Tech.

Little fish in a little pond, or bigger fish in a bigger pond? Have to play the best, to be the best. We need to accelerate our development by "sharping the saw" against steel, not jello.
