My letter to Dr. Turner

Postby lwjr » Tue Jul 06, 2010 12:01 pm

Dr. Turner,

I do not know what happened in the Hall and Jackson case, but if these two young men can be accepted by the NCAA academically, I do not understand why they can not be accepted into SMU. Maybe there is more to this than any of us are aware of and probably will never be made aware of. With that being said, let them sit out, redshirt them or whatever is required or needed to satisfy the powers to be, their freshman season to become more acclimated to the demands of college academics. From what I have been able to find and read about these two young men they seem to be good kids. I do not mean this to focus on these two young men, but all and future student athletes that fall into this category. I believe the school can maintain an outstanding academic reputation, while accepting kids who meet the NCAA requirements, but not SMU’s. It is accomplished at other schools. If the admission board only looks at a sheet of paper with a bunch of numbers and an essay to determine who is accepted and who is not, then SMU is missing out on some of the best young men and women this generation and future generations have to offer. That would be a shame.

Whether you/we like it or not, a successful athletics program (i.e. football and basketball programs) gives a school an identity and in return becomes one of the best advertising tools for the school. I think the school has already experienced that effect, after only one good football season! I do not want a renegade athletic program, I don’t think anyone does, but I do want an athletic program that we, alumni and friends of SMU, can be proud of to call their own.
I am tired of SMU football and basketball being the butt of jokes. We can win the right way and be successful if the administration will allow it to happen.

I have already bought my season tickets for football, again. I do not have to get on an airplane fly to Dallas, cheer on the Mustangs, spend the night in a hotel and buy more SMU gear for myself and kids.

The death penalty is a distant memory, it is time for SMU athletics to look forward not backwards.

Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,

Lee Wood

Fantasy letter to Dr. Turner

Dear Dr. Turner,

Please continue to run the university as you see fit. It would be nice if you would announce that athletes have to meet the same requirements as any other student.

I just want to see Ponyfans.com's football thread explode and nothing would do it faster than that simple admission.

Your obedient servant,

ponyte

PS, if you do the above, I bet I can reach 5000 post before the season starts.

You may be in luck as I am hearing that is exactly what he is going to do today...
