Why so late?

So we are all pissed that these kids are getting denied admission. I understand not everyone gets in......However, why are they finding this out SOOOO late? This gives them no time to do anything and SMU is really hurting these kids futures. For what? Accepting a scholarship from SMU?!?!

Anyone want to clarify as I just don't get this.

That is my question - I haven't seen any explanation and I frankly don't think any excuses whatsoever can justify this happening.

This is beyond comprehension and no excuse for it. These kids should know right after they graduate from HS.

They should know BEFORE they sign with us. Its called working behind the scenes so there are no surprises. Give the kid a chance.

It happened so late because this is SMU. In all seriousness, this University finds very unique ways to screw over potential and current students.

Not entirely sure, but I think I read something indicating that what we are hearing about now are denials of admission appeals. If that's correct, then presumably the affected student-athletes were actually denied admission and notified of same some time ago.

They may have had to go take the ACT's and qualify first, then appeal their earlier denial due to low SAT scores and so, we might be looking at something that really was relatively fast. I seem to remember it took about 2 months after I took the ACT's to get the grades but that was 100 years ago. Stallion probably knows the most about timing aspects of when they might have taken these exams and the turnaround.

I believe we are talking about mere days between the time the recruit was first notified of a problem and the hearing of the appeals. He was packed and ready to go and within hours of departure.

Has SMU come out with a statement about this yet or are we still waiting?

I expect you've gotten all the statments from SMU you are going to see on the subject.

At this point, something pretty much has to happen. This has turned into a minor media feeding frenzy, has stirred up a portion of the alumni base, and is having an impact on SMU's reputation with recruits. I talked to a couple of people I know who work at the university, and suffice it to say they are well aware of the [deleted] storm surrounding this issue. I would be surprised if we don't see some statement from Turner, Orsini, or Jones soon. The problem for SMU is that they have to be very careful what they say due to the confidentiality of the admissions process. I wouldn't expect a full explanation. But I do expect a statement.
