Mustang Sophomore Named To Prestigious List

July 14, 2010

FT. WORTH (SMU) - SMU sophomore-to-be Kyle Padron is among the 30 quarterbacks on the 2010 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award Watch List, award organizers announced today. The award is presented annually to the nation's top quarterback.

Padron's last outing was an MVP performance in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, where he passed for a school-record 460 yards and two TDs in leading SMU to a 45-10 win over Nevada. On the year, Padron posted a 159.9 passer rating to rank fifth in the nation and finished the year with a 5-1 record as a starter.

The list will be narrowed to 16 semifinalists on Oct. 25 and pared to three finalists on Nov. 22. Texas' Colt McCoy won the 2009 honor.

Conference USA is also represented on the list by Tulsa's G.J. Kinne and Houston's Case Keenum, who was one of three finalists for last year's award.

Padron and his teammates open the season on Sept. 5, in an ESPN-televised game at Texas Tech before hosting UAB in Dallas on Sept. 11.Tickets for these games and others are going fast. For ticket information, contact the SMU Ticket Sales Office at (214) SMU-GAME (768-4263).

The man has started six college games, and he already is getting recognition like this?
No, it doesn't mean he'll win it, or even that he has a chance to win it.
But it's still really cool.
Speaks volumes about the ability of Coach Jones and his staff to identify talent.

Taking the NCAA stat page for passers (that only include those with 75% of games played) and adding Padron, this is how he stacked up last season:

#1 in yards per attempt
#5 in pass efficiency
#9 in yards per completion
#10 in Completion %
#12 in yards per game
#21 in interception per attempt
#27 in completions per game

This season should showcase Padron and the passing game more. The area he really needs to step up for real attention is TDs. A lot of yards but not so many got into the endzone last season.

You don't want that award anyway, what with the TCU connection and all....

I always think these watch lists are reciprocal. I assume the TCU starting RB will be added to the Doak Walker list.
