Expansion ideas spread in MWC

Football coaches mull possibilities

By Irv Moss, Denver Post Sports Writer

Mountain West Conference football coaches favor expansion of the eight-team conference, but Colorado State's Sonny Lubick suggested there is no need to rush things.

"I like our league the way it is now, but I could go either way," Lubick said. "I wouldn't oppose the adding of one to three teams."

MWC commissioner Craig Thompson has indicated he favors expansion and expects a decision by as early as the end of the month and no later than the end of the year.

The big question seems to be whether to add one, two or four schools. If one school is added, Texas Christian has been most prominently mentioned as the ninth member.

Most football coaches agreed with Air Force's Fisher DeBerry, who likes the idea of adding one school so each team has four home and four road league football games.

"I would like to see our schedules even out a little bit between home and away games," DeBerry said. In the current alignment, teams play either four at home and three away or three at home and four away.

DeBerry said additional league games wouldn't alter the academy's desire to schedule Army and Navy each year and attempt to get Notre Dame back on the schedule.

In addition to TCU, schools mentioned as possible expansion targets include Boise State, Fresno State and Hawaii. But there are other possibilities.

San Diego State coach Tom Craft favors the addition of four teams to create a two-division, 12-team conference, perhaps a Mountain Division and a Pacific Division.

"We could have a conference championship game, with the winner going into the (Bowl Championship Series)," Craft said. "If TCU is one of the teams, I would favor two more from Texas. I would look at Houston and possibly Texas-El Paso."

Utah coach Urban Meyer said attempting to get the MWC champion into the BCS should be a consideration in the selection process.

"We'd like nothing more than to get a piece of the BCS pie," Meyer said.

New Mexico's Rocky Long liked the idea of adding a school from Texas, such as TCU.

"For the programs that recruit in Texas as we do, playing a team from Texas helps the recruiting," Long said.

TCU would add a tough stop on a team's schedule. The Horned Frogs are one of only two undefeated I-A teams in the country.

Wyoming coach Joe Glenn has heard Boise State and TCU are candidates and likes both.

"I think either one would give our conference a shot in the arm," Glenn said.

Coach John Robinson of Nevada-Las Vegas looked at the future with a need to strengthen the image of the MWC by adding the best possible team or teams.

"We'd all like to add Ralph's pizza parlor so we could have an automatic victory," Robinson said. "Do we want to be big guys or do we want to be small guys? There are two issues, one financial and the other the competitive environment in college football. I watched the CSU-New Mexico game and it was the darndest game I've ever seen. It was unbelievable, but it didn't generate the national attention it deserved."
