Thanks for sharing this. It was when I was a cheerleader. It even had that "Dukes of Hazzard" style of music! It was good to catch the You Tube links to other exciting big games back then.

It was a long time ago and I'm not sure of my memory but I think West Virginia's coach was Bobby Bowden. It was a really close game.

Yes, Bobby Bowden was the WV coach. I met him and his son Terry (who was a running back on that team) five years later after Bobby was already becoming a legend at Florida State. I asked Terry about the SMU game.He told me that his Dad went into that game not sure if the Mountaineers could get out alive. Not sure if they could stop the SMU running game, but they found a way to exploit the defense and that was all she wrote. Both of them considered this to be a big test and the win really gave their team a lot of confidence.

SMU lost, 28-22.
WVU was ranked 11th during that season according to SMU's media guide.

That was the detestable Dave Smith helmet without a horse on it. I remember when they opened with New Mexico, each team came out with silver helmets and red and gray color schemes and no one was quite sure which team was which at first.

Funny, I can't tell which team is SMU by looking at the uniforms.
Wasn't that the famous M&M backfield (Wayne Morris and Alvin Maxson (?))

Yes and they were in a wishbone, so both could play at the same time. Unfortunately, the wishbone also required a fullback first option, a QB second option and then a pitch or off tackle. Unfortunately both Wayne and Alvin were north south guys although Wayne could hit the corner. So, the other teams loaded up on the line. Funny thing was we had the three best receivers back then in the SWC in Freeman Johns, Kenny Harrison and Oscar Roan (who made All American as a tight end) and ran the bone because Dave Smith was hired to run the wishbone.
