I am attending new student orientation. There is a propaganda film we watched during lunch. The film was the 2009-2010 highlight film. There was a bunch of stuff about Bush. Highlights a the goalie scoring a goal. Academic stuff. There was some sports highlights as well.

The only spontaneous aplause ws the section of the Haweii Bowl game.

New students and the thing they cheered is football.
Football does matter.

Same exact thing during graduation during Ron Kirk's pathetic excuse for a commencement speech....only part anybody got excited for was the football season and Hawai'i Bowl win.

i talked to a kid last week who will be attending smu this fall. i mentioned smu football to him and suddenly he became very enthusiastic. he told me that he watched the hawii bowl. when i first met him i did't think he was the type of kid that would be interested in football. i think we may be creating a whole new generation of smu fans.

Let's hope it's "cool" this year to actually stay for the entire game.

I told President Turner, that while he has done a great job with the cosmetics, buildings, academics and endowent of the university, that we have created 23 successive classes of disinterested alumnus. While we have worked hard at developing a more diversified student body, there has been no sense of "Alma Mater" instilled in these students/alumnia to unify them and bond them to the university. School spirit can only be generated from a successful intercollegiate atheltic program. If he is finding his donors aging rapidly and no sense that the newer generations are on board, blame poor athletic managment.

We had session encouraging the students to attend all games and stay for the entire game. We had cheers, chants, Pony Battle Cry and the Alma Mater practise. They are trying to instill some spirit.
