Can someone tell me why a flack in Utah is writing about SMU? Is there an under the radar prospect that both SMU and Utah are after and this writer is trying to help the home team?

Balance - and let the field be level. That is what I take from this Utah writer.
SMU needs some fine tweaking on admissions but if you really want to help..
Endow a large fund for only Tutors and academic mentors. I would take a serious pay cut to mentor 5 kids at SMU and treat them like my own kids and make sure they took the steps to achieve.
Even then a few would drop out.
Go Mustangs.

I'm glad it was written and I'm sure Turner will see it when he gets his daily download of SMU related news articles, but what a lazy article. The guy did nothing to get quotes from SMU, Utah, Rice, etc. Didn't someone already prove that the whole Rice has easier standards was bulsh? All he did was regurgitate the Observer story and didn't fact check it to boot.
Happy it was written, but super lazy on the writer's part.

A good football team increases student applications, which enables institutions to cherry pick the best qualified applicants - thus improving the overall academics of the school.

Can you truly trust a guy named West Coast Johnny?

This guy's a little late to the party. To echo the first comment in this thread, it's odd to me that the Deseret News, of all papers, would run an article about SMU football. I'm really reaching to think of any link with the local Utah issues that the Deseret News usually covers.
Once again, we see another article about 2 admission cases that "prove" SMU is standing in the way of football success. Once again, the article wholly fails to acknowledge the two dozen or so marginal academic prospects who have been admitted to SMU in the past couple of years. A point that Stallion has repeatedly tried to make.

It takes a Utah sports writer to grasp the facts that all of our Phd administrators will never figure out. Sometimes the obvious is right in front of one's nose. If we have higher standards than Penn and Rice, we are not going to be competitive with the BCS.

Good article. Utah wants to sign 5 or 6 Texans each year. I don't know if that plan will stay the same since they are going to the PAC 10. They recruit the same players SMU is signing now that used to go up north. They have a pretty high opinion of themselves even though in Utah they are still second fiddle to BYU, even with the conference change.
