one of the interesting points made is that Dickerson never played with an Pro Bowl QB, WR, TE or blocking back. Interesting. A bunch of guys go to the Pro Bowl.

Emmit's the only top RB to play with a HoF QB and WR.

As a matter of fact that those Cowboy back to back Super Bowl teams were pretty impressive.

Nacho, if I could pick a starter among the group Dickerson would be hard to beat. My Dad told me Jim Brown was the best he ever saw but I was too young to see him in person. Sayers is probably a better all around guy because of his kick return prowess. Otherwise, I think Dickerson was better than Sanders. Campbell would be on par with Dickerson in my estimation. Hard to put either of them on the bench.

My SMU bias says that Dickerson, of course, is the greatest ever.

My realistic side says he's in a tie (or at least a very tight group) with Barry Sanders, Gayle Sayers, Jim Brown and Walter Payton.

He's bigger than Sanders, Sayers or Payton and had more breakaway speed than any of them.
Not as elusive as Sanders, Sayers or (in many cases) Payton, but with his size and speed, he didn't have to be.

As much as I detest everything about UT, I'd put Earl Campbell in the next tier, just below the top guys, along with guys like John Riggins, Billy Sims, O.J. Simpson, Franco Harris and Tony Dorsett (and Reggie Dupard, Craig James, Doak Walker, Kyle Rote and Jeff Atkins, of course).

In my mind, of course, Dickerson always will be the best of the best.

One can always argue who was the best, but Sayers was the most fun to watch. Unbelievable moves.

I agree — he was Barry Sanders before Sanders, at least in terms of his ability to make people look ridiculous trying to tackle him. He could start and stop on a dime, and would have defenders grabbing air. The knee problems that ended his career too early were absolutely criminal — they denied fans the chance to watch a really rare runner for a few more years.

Those who never got to see McIlhenny pitch (or fake the pitch) to Dickerson missed out as well. An absolutely unstoppable option. And just when #19 ran that many yards on you, in would come Craig James.
