Top 10 questions as training camp opens10. Who are these guys? Are they the Mustangs who beat Nevada 45-10 in the Hawaii Bowl or the team that barely beat Rice (2-10) by 31-28.
9. Who will play cornerback opposite Sterling Moore? He is an All-Conference (potentially) cornerback but whoever plays on the other side will have no experience at this level. 8. Can the offensive line protect Kyle Padron at quarterback? I expect Texas Tech and TCU to blitz like crazy against us. 7. Can anyone replace Shawnbry McNeal at running back? Our two freshmen have lots of potential but will they be ready in just five weeks? 6. How many turnovers will the defence be able to create? We're fast but undersized - we'll need plenty of interceptions and fumble recoveries to compensate. 5. How much will we miss Emmanuel Sanders (and Terrance Wilkerson)? We will need a couple of pleasant surprises at wide receiver. 4. Will this be the year we finally beat Navy? Those undersized, over-achievers drive me nuts. 3. Who will step up to take over from Chase Kennemer as the leader on defence? 2. Will this be the year that we finally sell out Ford Stadium on a consistent basis? I know the luxury suites are filled but it would be great to see the end zone seats packed as well. 1. Are we going to be embarrassed in our season opener on ESPN against Texas Tech? It won't be the end of the world if we lose but it's hard to forget how badly we were embarrassed on national TV three years ago.
Re: Top 10 questions as training camp opensWith a relatively experienced OL and QB (still young but they have been there) I welcome a blitz on every play. That just opens up the secondary and good reads mean very big plays. The problem with TCU and Tech is the possibility of pressure on Padron without having to blitz. If they can do that then the RBs are neutralized because they have to stay in and block, and we probably need to put in a tight end and then we are not playing our game. I have confidence in our OL for the first time in a long time. Short on depth and that could hurt but ability, talent and experience are there if they can hold up injury and stamina wise.
All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
Re: Top 10 questions as training camp opens10. they're definitely the 'good guys' from the Hawaii Bowl. more experienced in winning and in the system, more mature.
9. -- 8. yes. plus, with KP's poise in the pocket, and his experience, I'm expecting him to be able to read the blitzes reasonably well. 7. I am believing the freshmen have good potential. plus, I am thinking that there might be a touch less dependence upon the running game, since KP seems an upgrade in the pass game from the first half of last year. the key for the RBs will be their ability to execute the blocking schemes well. 6. I am hoping speed will help. 5. of course, we will miss ES, but someone will step up. more importantly, the football will be consistently delivered accurately. KP and the receivers have been working hard together this off-season, so hopefully the chemistry pays off. 4. Absolutely yes. No games given away this year. 3. -- 2. Hopefully, toward the end of the year that will happen. 1. No embarrassment. I'm expecting a W (optimistically), but even with a loss, it will be a good, competitive game.

Re: Top 10 questions as training camp opensraise the bar a bit...
stable-boy for the four horsemen of the apocalypse
Re: Top 10 questions as training camp opensIt boils down to 3 things :
1) Breakaway speed at running back .....see what happens to JJ's offensive scheme with a 1000 yd runner that can go the distance (Shawnbrey) 2) Secondary.... Losing McCann, Rock and Kevion Gamble is huge (coaches were expecting Gamble to be an all-conference selection this year) 3) Depth...any injuries to OL, DL and secondary could be a big setback Life after Death (Penalty)
Re: Top 10 questions as training camp opensI just got indigestion .
Re: Top 10 questions as training camp opensI think the defense is as good or better (I hope). Padron should be better than the six games he started, but he was pretty good then. ES and Shawnbrey are huge losses. Kennemer might have been the MVP on the team last year but he also seems easier to replace than Sanders. We shall see.

Re: Top 10 questions as training camp opens
0) How many new people will you get to come experience the greatness of the boulevard and an SMU football game?
Re: Top 10 questions as training camp opensI have to say one thing. A year ago I kept asking who will be the back up QB or maybe the third QB. KP, suggested by some, answered well. Not to be a sunshiner, but here's hoping that JJ and staff have some more players under wraps who can step in, although I believe that the TTU and TCU games both will be hard work.
Go Ponies.
Re: Top 10 questions as training camp opens10. These guys are hungry for success. Just talking to them about the attendance during summer workouts shows that they are ready to do big things.
9. Whoever takes the 2nd corner spot will hold it down. Great help over the top/flats with Banjo and good covering linebackers with the 3-4. Coach Odom makes corners. 8. Only missing a center. Blake McJunkin as 1+ seasons experience and watched Enright do all the right things last year. Beach will be All-Conference,Tennison(if coming back strong from surgery) is the meanest, & Brooks became a wall late last season plus all are 2 years deep in the system. Sucks about Lirebeus though... 7. Coach Jones system will put backs in the position to make plays. Might not be Shawnbrey plays but to move the ball. If the passing game stays crisp there will be plenty holes to run through because Al D, D3 and Beasley have the backers attention. 6. The defensive mentality is force turnovers. In 2008 the team didn't go for the turnover as much as just making the tackle. A year later the mentality changed to get the ball every play. If you miss the interception the offense has your back. Speed triumphs size in this conference. Everything is beginning to be spread wide open and you need speed to close the space. 5. Gonna miss 17. His production and leadership carried the team last year. However, Al D is healthy again, Beasley and Padron have worked together all summer creating a nice chemistry(E. Sanders did the same last summer), D3 is going to be a freak. Really gonna miss Wilkerson but B. Haynes is physical and should be huge in the red zone. 4. Ugh Navy... The lose last year was crushing esp. since it was for the 1st Frank Ganz trophy. But it was an alot closer game than the year before, so I think this year they bring home the trophy. 3. Linebackers will be great again. Pete has the leadership of Kennemer and an amazing drive. Good acceleration and will get the D-line where they are supposed to be and funnel the tackles to him and the other backers. 2. We beat Tech and it's a possibility. Sell outs are highly unlikely though. TCU & U of H game should be huge. 1. Tech was so much better than we were and our D-line was horrible. These guys have been on the big stage and finally put everything together. They know the feeling and they know the reward. Coach Jones and his staff have changed the whole mindset of the locker room and they will be up for the challenge this year. "I'm always going to do things on the highest level. If Coach Jones decides to fire me after this meeting, I'm going to pack my things and drive away at the highest level!" --Coach Frank Ganz
