The events of the summer for WAC and BYU sound like a movie plot. We can assume that the feelings in and out of the WAC, MWC and BYU are bruised:

I've got to believe there is a merger in the futures of the WAC and MWC. BYU and Hawaii could force the issue by both going Indy in football

might one day see something similar to the old WAC 16, sans Texas and Oklahoma

I wonder whether UTEP would prefer CUSA to a conference that looked like this:

SDSU, SJSU, Fresno, Boise, Idaho, UNLV, Nevada

UTEP, UNM, NMSU, CSU, AFA, Wyoming, Utah St

Time for TCU to come home if BYU leaves the MWC

There is anger at Fresno State and Nevada, as well. From the Fresno Bee.

Utah fan: 'Shame on Fresno State'

Shame on Fresno State. It left the other WAC schools hanging after agreeing not to leave in order to keep the WAC together. Fresno State knew its quick turn-about would potentially kill the WAC and perhaps some of its schools. But, hey, this is OK. Fresno State was only doing what was in its best interest. This has become the excuse. And now, this excuse can be used as the correct answer to every question on an exam in Fresno State's ethics in business course. Do they even teach that course?

And before you argue that Nevada and Fresno only did to the WAC what Utah State and BYU were fixing to do to the MWC, you need to retake your preschool class regarding the difference between apples and oranges. BYU never entered into an agreement with its MWC brethren for the sole purpose of keeping the conference together. In addition, BYU made its intentions regarding independence known months ago. Fresno State made a promise and knew other members relied upon it. Fresno State did not hesitate to break it!

Its actions amount to much more than simply changing conferences, a la Boise State earlier. Fresno State knows this. Its fans know this. But self justifications are easy to come by and are pouring out of Fresno at a rate its own sewer system can't accommodate (or maybe it can).

But wait it gets funnier. The WAC and BYU has now contacted SMU, UH, and UTEP about joining the WAC with I assume a guaranteed BYU game on the schedule. Lets see, SMU, UH, UTEP, USU, Hawaii, Idaho, La. Tech, SJS, and NMSU with BYU as an all sports. I'm sorry but that alignment does nothing for me.

I could quote a song, but then this thread would go down in flames.

I'd take a move to the WAC, only so I can see the ponies when they play San Jose State.

ESPN Monday Noon Update on BYU. Implies SMU/CUSA teams never contacted

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketb ... NHeadlines
Had the initial deal not blown up with the WAC, then BYU would have had games against Nevada. There was also a chance that with BYU in it, the league could have lured former members UNLV and San Diego State back since it would have appeared to be a stronger conference. At least one source with direct knowledge of the situation said there was never any contact with the WAC and any Conference USA member, including Houston, SMU and UTEP. The Miners might have made sense, but that would have been something to look at after BYU already joined the league.

BYU decision looming; is the WAC pursuing UTEP?

Sporting News

The Salt Lake Tribune reported Sunday that Brigham Young University still wants to be independent in football and part of a conference in its other sports, and that it may announce a decision as early as today.
According to the newspaper, university president Cecil Samuelson received approval last week from BYU trustees to move ahead with whichever plan he considers "most beneficial" to the mission of theuniversity and the organization that runs it, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
BYU must notify the Mountain West Conference of any possible move by Wednesday so it can play in another league in the 2011-12 academic year.
Reports earlier this month said the university had decided to join the Western Athletic Conference for all but football, a plan that reports Sunday said were months in the making. The MWC retaliated by adding WAC members Nevada and Fresno State. Later reports indicated BYU would, in fact, stay in an expanded MWC.
WAC commissioner Karl Benson told the Tribune on Friday that his conference was still negotiating with BYU. On Sunday, Benson would not comment on reports his conference also is pursuing Conference USA schools Houston, Texas-El Paso and Southern Methodist. Montana, Montana State and Texas-San Antonio also have been rumored to be WAC targets.
