Intro for Mustangs - idea for new tradition.. maybe?

So.. just trying to come up with something that would be unique to SMU.. something that would get things going prior to the football team running out on the field. I've already posted that I'm hoping we utilize the new HD jumbotron and have a nice video intro.. here' hoping that happens.

But what about announcing the team's entrance in a different kind of way.. and starting a new tradition of announcing the team?

Here's my thought.. Most of us have been to Lone Star Park or another horse racing track and we've seen the guy playing the trumpet for the "Call to the horses" or "fanfare". Why wouldn't we do that for our Mustangs prior to them taking the field? Maybe even get a celeb like Wynton Marselis or a otherwise do it for the big games?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmEM-qj8FY8

Just an idea.. but could be kinda cool prior to a video or the team running onto the field.

They could also do this up and down the boulevard to get people in the stadium!!!!!

Wynton won the Meadows Award, so he owes us!

Why wouldn't we do it?

Because we're Mustangs, not thoroughbreds.

And contrary to the two saddled equines that have suddenly started appearing at our games, Mustangs are wild horses that are stereotypically riderless, not saddled with jockeys.

But you're thinking the right way. I'm for anything that adds to the fanfare of the games, as long as it fits within SMU's standards and established traditions.

The Mustang Band trumpets know how to play that. It's played often at games before the "Call to the Horses" chant.

5-4-3-2
Give a cheer for SMU!

Go, Stangs, Go!

Ah, yes - the silliest little chant ever forced upon the band.

I don't know what is worse, only counting down "5-4-3-2" to shoehorn in a rhyme for SMU?

Or institutionalizing "'Stangs" even though nobody calls the team by that name.

We are Mustangs, not 'Stangs.

I remember when they originally taught us the chant (1989, I believe) we pleaded with them to let us say "Go, Mustangs, Go" but to no avail...

I had never thought about how unrealistic it is to expect wild Mustangs to respond to a horse call - and now that I have I think that might actually be dumber than the chant itself!

As an MB'er from '89, you are dead on with the chant being "forced" upon us. It was a bad fit now and then.

I know they play it.. but i'm saying make this a "formal" intro at midfield or on the "grassy knoll".

Even the PA guy could say something like "Ladies and Gentelman.. the call to the Mustangs." And btw.. they don't just play that fanfare.. they "trumpeter" typically plays a little jazz or dixie after the fanfare. So this could be whatever they make it..

I realize this is a call for race horses and we're mustangs.. but we got nuthin! Just trying to be creative here.

Mustangs are not prancing race horses, they are rip snorting, rawhided wild horses that are likely to put a hoof in yer face.

In answer to your suggestion, neigh.

sounds a bit too fem for the current crop of entry fan fares - we need a younger hipper edgier deal.....i like the produced video if it is done with quality - no animation though - those are stupid - UT's was a joke a couple of years ago.

Once again, a little perspective. Mustangs, as are all horses except for the Przewalski's Horse or Mongolian Wild Horse (classification disputed, either Equus ferus przewalskii or Equus przewalskii), are feral.

Mustangs are free-roaming (unlike our saddled horses and Peruna) that are primarily the decedents of horses brought to this continent by Spanish conquistadors. Thus feral, not wild.

A more accurate statement might be something like mustangs are not prancing race horses, they are rip snorting, rawhided free-roaming horses .

I know, this is a bite much. Kind of like the controversy over the meaning and shades of our colors red and blue. I guess I am too bored waiting for kickoff.

I like the idea of showing some sort of video/playing some music to get the younger crowd into it between the time that the band marches down the field to form the "tunnel" and when the team runs out onto the field.

But when the team runs out onto the field, the band needs to play the fight song.

The best idea I ever heard for the new horses (back before it was known they would be gelded and saddled like trail mules) was from some guys on the team. Horses in the tunnel just going crazy from all the guys and Margus or Beach could slap it across the [deleted] and let it tear around the field for a few minutes. Pandemonium, maybe it would take to the bleachers, etc. Just a wild [deleted] mustang running all over the place.
