The Mountain West Conference plans to “take the conversation to the next level” with Conference USA on various issues affecting to the leagues, including access to the Bowl Championship Series in college football.

MWC Commissioner Craig Thompson requested the chief executives of league members Boise State, Air Force and Texas Christian form a subcommittee to meet with three chief executives from Conference USA in Dallas-Forth Worth sometime in September or October, according to an Aug. 23 memo from the MWC obtained by The San Diego Union-Tribune. Tentative Conference USA participants included executives from Tulane, Central Florida and Southern Methodist.

Tulane? Really?
Don't get me wrong, it's a really good school, and after everything New Orleans has been through, I hope Tulane catches a break (right after SMU, of course). But they make our crowds look like Nebraska or Alabama.
Hopefully, a move like that could really jump-start Tulane athletics (again, elevating them to just a notch or two below SMU...)

actually it's not. SMU officials MAY meet with MWC, and the implication is misleading. Maybe I'm taking this realignment stuff too seriously. I've been refreshing 4 boards nonstop for 2 weeks.

Especially since there is a legit nugget of info in that story.
It appears, for the time being, that MWC and CUSA are working towards the "playoff" between the conference winners for a BCS spot rather than the sometimes-rumored merging of the two conference's top teams.
Interesting that both conferences are actively pursuing this scenario and aren't necessarily afraid to have it out there in the media.

The bolded indicates that you are probably taking it too seriously.

The reason why I titled the thread as I did is in a response to the thread posted by someone else that is called something like "We may be headed to MWC"

Tulane president is kind of a bigwig in NCAA circles, if I recall. He's been pretty outspoken in the past about BCS stuff, conference membership, etc. I imagine that's why he got invited to the table (or maybe it's because flights are cheaper from New Orleans?)

Agree with others who say SMU should stay put. MWC is gutted without BYU and Utah. Not worth the travel expense and detachment from regional rivalries.

Better idea is to try to get TCU into the C-USA fold. But they don't have much impetus to switch conferences unless they're just tired of the travel. Would be at best a lateral move. They want to stay positioned for a BCS league to grab them.

So the better idea might be to work with TCU and Boise State on forming a new conference with the best of C-USA and MWC. A Texas/Mountain conference might retain enough of a football rep while trimming some of the geographic excess from C-USA and MWC.

We already play TCU in football, but returning SMU-TCU to a conference rivalry would do wonders for basketball. As a non-conference game, SMU-TCU is almost a wasted effort.

Better than waiting.

The point of the thread is that the selected schools from the two conferences would meet to discuss scheduling and year end games to discuss issues from a conference perspective. I didn't interpet it to mean that they were speaking with UCF, SMU and Tulane to promote MWC membership to schools within CUSA.

If the discussions are constructive and we promote mutual interests, perhaps rationalizing geograhies makes sense with UTEP going west while TCU goes east, as only one example.

Further, with 10 members, MWC may want to add Utah State and get UTEP for 12. Plus, by bringing in Hawai'i, TCU could go to CUSA. All reasonable options, but the Frogs will not be gaining much in such a move. They are playing for bigger stakes.

Poor WAC, BTW. They have been scr*wed.
