It's 6:45 am in Dallas, and the lights are on at Ford Field on the SMU campus, because it's time to practice.

Since head coach June Jones took over in 2008, the Mustangs start practice at seven every morning.

Safety Chris Banjo says he sets his alarm for 5:15. "I hit the snooze button a couple times, but I do set it pretty early."

Quarterback Kyle Padron, who lives across Mockingbird Lane from the stadium, gets up at 6:00 and then will "grab some breakfast, hop in the shower, kind of rinse off and then come over here to practice."

"We get to bed early," says June Jones. "And we get the kids up and go to class, and our GPA went way up in Hawaii and they have gone up here."

You know the old saying, the early bird gets the worm? Well these early Mustangs are interested only in getting wins, and that first one will be tough, playing Sunday in Lubbock.

"We have to come ready. Line play, alignment, assignment football, especially on the defensive end, and we'll be ready to go," says Banjo. "We just have to keep our composure. I know we're going into a packed stadium, but like I said we just have to be ready to go."

"It will probably be pretty tough on us, going to a hostile crowd," admits Padron. "But we're ready for it. Coach Jones has done a great job preparing us, and we've had some coaches that have played at Tech before and they told us what to expect and kind of how to handle it."

After winning eight times a year ago, there's reason to believe that number will increase. And that reason comes with a number also.

"Number two," says Jones, chuckling. "Kyle Padron (has) really played well and had a good camp."

Kyle Padron took over at mid-season and went 5-1 as a starter, with a passer rating just under 160, which was fifth best in the country. And he did it as a true freshman.

"I don't feel any extra pressure. As a quarterback you're going to get a lot of attention, a lot of blame, a lot of success as well. I take it in stride."

All those losing seasons appear to be in the past. It's a new day for the SMU program.
