7 Year Long Football Study

Football Outsiders, a research group, did a 7 year long study of football and came up with a number of conclusions. Some are obvious, some are a little surprising:

You run when you win, but don't necessarily win when you run

Rushing is more dependent on the offensive line than people realize, but pass protection is more dependent on the quarterback himself than people realize.

Shotgun formations are generally more efficient than formations with the quarterback under center.

And my favorite:

A running back with 370 or more carries during the regular season will usually suffer either a major injury or a loss of effectiveness the following year, unless he is named Eric Dickerson.

Note: This is based on NFL research, but you will find many of these things applicable to not only college, but also specifically, say, the Run-and-Shoot:

Running on third-and-short is more likely to convert than passing on third-and-short.

But it is an interesting read.

Bennett is still trying to disprove this one.

I commented on PB's infatuation with the swinging gate for years, but few here were savvy enough to pick up on it. Many times PB's teams couldn't execute a simple punt formation, but they ran the gate to perfection.

Jim Zorn got his playbook because the Redskins tried the swinging gate last year.
