After being down by 14 and with the opportunity to close the game to within 7, McMakin chooses to try three straight passes and settle for a field goal, when on the half yard line, to close it to within 10 rather than try a QB sneak, bulldoze a FB, or anything else to score a TD to go into halftime only 7 down against USC. It may just be my opinion, but against a top ranked opponent, you must take risks to reap the rewards. If we find ourselves in the same situation on Sunday, I hope JJ plows it in with Zach line from the half yard line.

When we picked up Jones, the Hawaii fans told us to be prepared for frustration when Jones does things like this.

If you're talking risks, it seems riskier to try passes in that situation. There is a greater chance for a turnover.

My guests last evening were shocked at the continual passing and I tried to explain that you can't expect a lot of "Run" in the "Run and Shoot".

They were amazed at all the unconventionality of it all.

Kiffin was playing a lot of inexperienced and Freshmen Defensive players as he knows he needs to get them as much playing experience ASAP before the recruiting restrictions start taking their toll.

USC Offense is really good but the Defense is in strong need of more game experience. Kiffin had to use JJ's mold in not allowing full contact in practice so this was the Defense's first experience really getting to hit something in anger.

The R & S is tough to defend as the score indicated and overall I liked Hawai'i implementation. I thought I heard that "Mouse" was coaching the Hawai'i receivers but may be mistaken.

Overall Hawai'i play gives me renewed hope for SMU Sunday as the R & S can be deadly!

Hawaii's coaching staff worked on red zone offense all offseason, with an emphasis in spring practice and training camp.

2009 Red-zone efficiency comparison:
SMU scored 91% of the time in the red zone (#12 in the country)
Hawaii scored 63% of the time in the red zone (#119 in the country, only Rice was worse)

SMU scored TDs 70% of the time in the red zone
Hawaii scored TDs 46% of the time in the red zone (lower than Rice)

Hawaii got screwed at the end of the half. The receiver was clearly on top of the USC defender. His knee never hit the turf. One angle showed his elbow may have been down, but the other two showed he got his hand down and kept his elbow up. Even if it was down, the nose of the ball should have been on the goal line, not a yard out. And, what was with the ref's hand signal after the review. EVERYONE thought he signaled touchdown.

yes, receivers coach is the title, but mostly to mentor the young OC, Rolovich.

That was obviously a bad call but the officiating in all the games last night really sucked as a whole.

Apparently it is not only the players who are rusty at their game!

We were all USC alums last night and we had to run the DVR back and pause to read the sign!

We all had a Great Chuckle!
