John Hampton checks in with his impressions of the goings-on in Lubbock, and while PonyFans are disappointed with the loss, Hampton says one reason SMU was able to close the margin on the scoreboard Sunday was because of a decided coaching advantage. Had the game gone on any longer ... who knows?

best part about Lubbock and where we parked was watching the last play, getting to the car, and being at the airport 10 minutes later

No question our Coaches did a great job of figuring out the tech coverages by the second quarter because after that SMU scored a TD or a Field Goal 5 out of the next 7 times we had the ball. The D played great early. My only problem was playing a TRUE freshman at punt returner to start this game and said so before the game. Odds say that for every punt return by a True freshman in a 1st game, you can expect a fumble every one in 4 returns. He fumbled during his 2nd return in our territory which was a HUGE momentum changer.

one other note. tech's OL coach changed their blocking scheme a few times in the game to create mismatches and neutralize stunts. Bert Hill did a great job of keying in on these minor adjustments to shut down there scheme. However, when we rushed three we were dead against that OL and that is to be expected with our depth and situation at NT. The rotation worked real well and was a good way to iron out the rust in the front seven before CUSA play opens.

There were subtle changes in what we did defensive and offensively not clearly visible to the naked eye. They timing in which certain plays developed on offense were also adjusted, really perfect play calls against the hybrid looks they showed, but execution negated that advantage. Klemm adjusted some of the blocking schemes during the game on the OL with great success. Its awesome when you can tune into a college game and see an OL perform pass pro using techniques that only few NFL teams can execute as effectively. Hopefully by game three the offense will be executing at a high level, forcing opposing offenses to play catchup, then the D can notch a few takeaways.
