grounding from the endzone

a play in the UT/tech game just reminded me, why wasnt it grounding and a safety when the Wazzu qb threw it out of way out of bounds with no receiver around from the end zone? he was dead between the tackles.

I wondered the same thing-was he outside tackle box-ball did go past line of scrimmage

i had a good vantage point and i sure didnt thing he was outside the tackles.
