Anybody have a replay of the "punt return"/"worst call of the year?"

You probably know the rules better but it is clear Coach Jones disagrees with the call.

The block that "blocked him into the receiver" was in a different direction, away from the receiver and the player blocked took two or three steps back in the direction of the receiver, against the direction of the block and it appeared to be his intention to get to the receiver.

I thought the call was horrible at the time and still do.

:?

Are you kidding? Watch the broadcast of the game where they give you the camera angle behind DJ. Yes, SMU pushes the guy, but its 5-8 yards back and the WSU player aims himself and lunges right into DJ. It's a horrible call...

Nice summary by Leach. Even better the fact that he recognized both the offense and defense stepped up their play. It is encouraging that both sides of the ball are playing solid now.

Game Highlights showing absolutely nothing but negative plays from an SMU standpoint.

The gunner clearly changes direction after the hit. He takes the hit and continues for three steps and makes a change of direction immediately before contact with DJ 5 yards after being hit. In order for that to be the proper call, the rule would have to be that after contact with a player on the receiving team, the player on the kicking team may make contact with the punt returner without penalty. That is simply not the rule.

It isn't about stopping. It is about not running into the returner.
