nothing I hate worse is a half-assed fan or writer making a point about college football with an analogy to the NFL. Really aren't too interested.

His main point is that Dallas is a hard sell, fickle sports population cf. Denver.

Here's the deal about Cowboys Stadium: It's too expensive for local fans. There's lots of info trickling out about how Jerry had to fill empty seats last season, giving tickets to employees and such.
Also, a lot of the Cowboys' season ticket holders are out-of-towners. They had trouble selling out the playoff game last year because so many of the out-of-town season ticket holders couldn't commit to playoff games without knowing the schedule in advance. And locals don't even try to buy tickets because they're so expensive - or at least that's the perception.
So when a team like the Bears comes in, they get a ton of fans. It's a lot easier to blow your paycheck on one game to see your team, as opposed to 10 games (8 plus two preseason games) to see every Cowboys game.
And as posh as Cowboys Stadium is, if you go to a game it's definitely a blue collar crowd - at least in the main bowl. It was the same way at Texas Stadium. A lot of people are blowing their vacation oney to see one or two Cowboys games, but not a lot of people - at least not as many as Jerry needs - are buying season ticket packages. That's why, for the first time in my 40-plus years in Dallas, you heard Cowboys season tickets actually being advertised on radio and TV last season.
Jerry has priced himself out of his own market, at least in the current economic climate.
The connection to SMU is that if we can maintain a winning product on the field, there's a potential audience out there that can't afford Cowboys games but could afford college football.

And we could not have started winning at a better time. Cowboys are on a slow decline and starting to really show it.
