Anybody see the last play of the first half - Texas vs UCLA? Play is over/half is over and camera zeroes-in on UCLA DB #22. They fire the pistol to end the half - I guess a carryover from the olden days - (it wasn't Big Smokey or Little Smokey or whatever they named the "cannon") and, in a close-up shot, #22 ducks and looks around. He realizes what it was and starts laughing. It was hilarious.

It's still Smokey the Cannon that is fired to end the half.

I believe "old smokey" is allowed in nonconference games. That was funny!

Big 12 has no rules against cannons, Tech, A&M, UT and OU I know all use some form of cannon. I believe Kansas St. too

I guess, there's some humor in the reaction of some players to the sound of gunshots.
but, it seems a reminder to me of the kind of environments that some of these kids come from, and their struggle to escape it. not a lot of humor in that.

I do not care what kind of environment you are from. If you hear a gunshot nearby, chances are you will duck.

We had a gun (probably a starters pistol) to end quarters/halves/games in HS. Certainly before technology had more civilized ways to end quarters. Never once thought anything of it. Of course, in the South, a starter pistol is little better than a paint ball pop so not anything to get worked up over. Now if a 300 Winchester Mag is popped off, that would get someone's attention.
