Texas power poll

Mac Engel ranks the college football teams in Texas:

I never thought I would write this - TCU is the only Texas football team ranked in the Top 20 of the latest AP Poll. USA Today has the 'Horns 16th.

1. TCU, 4-0. The Frogs didn't blow SMU out of Highland Park, but they remain perfect. Their strength of schedule will begin to take a beating this Saturday with a game at 1-3 Colorado St.

2. Texas, 3-1. Looked painfully average in home loss to Bruins. Can change a lot of opinions if it can defeat the Sooners this week.

3. Texas A&M, 3-0. Real season starts on Thursday in Stillwater against Okie St.

4. Texas Tech, 2-1. A tricky game this weekend at Iowa St.; the Cyclones are just annoying enough to pose a threat. Tommy Tuberville really can't afford to lose this game.

5. Baylor, 3-1. Any shot of reaching a bowl will be determined this weekend; the Bears host a very average to bad Kansas team. After that things get dicey.

6. SMU, 2-2. Good effort against the Frogs, but they can make a push for an open CUSA race. The Ponies are making serious improvements.

7. UTEP, 3-1. Rallied to beat Memphis; the Miners are surviving and can qualify in a bowl in a mediocre conference.

8. Houston, 3-1. Impressive in winning without their top 2 QBs. The Coogs are at Miss. St. on Oct. 9.

9. Stephen F. Austin, 3-1. The Jacks are a serious I-AA power.

10. Rice, 1-3. The Owls had a great season, but it's time to prepare for finals.

11. North Texas, 1-3. Todd Dodge lives to coach another day after the Mean Green posted their first win of the season. A win this weekend at La.-Lafayette, and who knows ...

Both of the Engels reflect the declining knowledge of our writers in todays newspapers. And they wonder why subscriptions are declining! They take cheap shots at coaches after a loss and jump on the bandwagon after a win. They know less than most fans who watch tv only. Remember the good old days with the knowledgeable and fun to read sportswriters with an inside take on the different sports teams? A&M, Baylor are overrated. Parity is back in Texas and the Big 12 and most of colege football. With injuries to key players(esp. QB's) and schedulling difficulties with teams playing on TH or Fr or after rivalry games, upsets are gonna happen. That is why TCU and Boise State and the pressure of having to win every week to make their goals are top 10 teams in my book. By the way....it looked like the UT fans came early but forgot to be loud and stay late last Saturday. Can you say spoiled?

Baylor is truly pathetic, again. Yeah, they'll probably beat KU (boy, I bet they're thinking about the good old days under the T-Rex at KU), but after that, they'll likely lose the other 7 conference games. The Aggies have played girls schools, so hard to tell. UT got undressed by a mediocre UCLA team and struggled against TT. OU looked mortal on Sat., but probably wins the South. NE wins that conference in a walk.

Good post! Or at least the first half - didn't read the second half. Just like everyone else, I only have an attention span long enough to read tweets & PMs. Journalists? Anyone who strings together more than 4 complete sentences is just wasting everyone's time. Journalists, should just report that the Big 12 schools are better than everyone for 5 seconds before the pop-up add for Canadian Viagra. And then the "journalist" should move on to how TCU & SMU couldn't compete in a real conference (repeat pop-up add).

How is UTEP ahead of Houston?

People are overestimating the effect of losing Keenum.

Here ya go, Engel, FIFY:
1. TCU
2. UT
3. TTU
4. SMU
4. A&M
6. UH
7. Baylor
8. UTEP

4/5 are interchangeable until after Thursday night's result when A&M actually plays someone.

what is it that warrants putting SMU ahead of A$M or Baylor?

Let's see how we do against Rice

Please pay no attention to the writer from the Fort Worth Star Telegram Greensheet. Can they have more bias?
