NTR - Cal to cut 5 sports due to financial shortages

The rugby team had 25 national championships. It is like the Notre Dame of college rugby.

Seems like with private funding you could continue certain sports. Don't know what legal challenges to that which might exist.

its nothing like the ND of rugby because Cal IS the benchmark for collegiate rugby.

Cal is keeping 24 sports and only 14 are required for D1. They are now tied with UCLA for second in number in the Pac 10...Stanford has 34 I believe. Oregon has just added baseball after not having it for years....the 'arms' race in football is a driver, however the UC budget issues is the main reason. The UC system is in trouble and athletics is having it's political blood letting. Rugby and baseball are the ones that are getting the most noise out here (both are high profile) and rugby is almost self funding, so my take is that it is political i.e. shows that the school is even cutting successful sports. It's a shame for the 200+ athletes and the coaches that will lose their jobs, however in today's environment, it isn't a surprise.

So I guess I have to explain the avatar now...
a couple years back Oscar and MM65 were dominating a thread sharing some serious man love.
I decided to make a joke of it and make a cheap avatar of the two of their's in a heart...then HB ponydad used his photo shop skills to make the one I have now.
