Mustang 11

Met a real nice student that told me about the Pony 11 - which is a spirit group, the ones that paint themselves up. Great to see his passion...I wasn't aware of that spirit group before.

He said it's been a lot easier to get kids excited lately rather than follow other teams like UT, LSU, etc...

Class unity is an important part of the SMU experience. With that in mind, Mustang 11 is a group of 11 first-year students selected to promote school spirit and traditions during their first year. Mustang 11 was named in honor of the University’s founding in 1911 and has been a prestigious organization instrumental in upholding school pride.

Yeah, I had heard of them, but didn't know too much about how they were selected or anything. That was all the info I could find.

It's a great organization. I was a member of Mustang 11 my freshmen year and served as the peer advisor to the group my sophomore year. In the fall, freshmen apply to become a part of it and go through a series of interviews. Members are selected by the previous year's members.

U11 as a whole is made up of two student groups. The Union and Mustang 11. The Union focuses on getting class involvement up and increasing student and young alumni giving. Mustang 11 is meant to get people pumped up for football games and spread the word to the student body about pep rallys, games, etc. Unfortunately for me, that was pretty hard to do my freshmen and sophomore year, but we tried our best. We painted ourselves, screamed loud in the front row, and made several road trips to away games. Mustang 11 also leads the team out of the gate at the beginning of the game. You probably saw me running out onto the field leading the team at some point.

Let me know if you want to know anymore about it. I'd loved to fill you in.

We should bring Terry out of retirement for an SMU commercial line. Have him destroy the stereotypical [deleted] walking to Dallas hall flashing hook em. Would be totally worth the money and it would get noticed easily.

I was on mustang 11. I always enjoyed being on the field with a slight chemical imbalance (good Boulevard) when the other team came out of the tunnel. Fun to get inside their heads a little bit.

This is good to know.....this should be a prestigious spot like the Cowboys at Texas...this kid we met at the Rice game with PonyFan had a contagious spirit. We need these guys and should keep their honor intact.

They usually had to ask the coach what our 4-syllable word insults meant. Delayed response.
