UNIVERSITY PARK – SMU's ability to block kicks, especially field goal attempts, is no fluke.

The Mustangs blocked two attempts Saturday night against Tulsa, clearly huge as SMU held on for a 21-18 win.

Defensive end Margus Hunt blocked one in the first quarter and defensive end Kevin Grenier blocked another early in the fourth quarter, keeping SMU's lead at 21-10 for the moment.

Blocking FG is a huge D weapon. And three different individuals have blocked 5 attempts. Potential that is 15 prevented points. And that will shape how other teams handle scoring opportunities in the rest of our season.

Few teams have ever been able to boast that their FG blocking unit is a force to be reckoned with in a game.

How many coaches/teams have to devote time and strategy to counter a FG blocking unit? Just one more thing that occupies other teams attention when preparing for SMU.

Of the top 25 teams, which one can claim this level of excellence in a critical aspect of the game?

For opposing kickers, having to concentrate on the kick while trying to locate Margus or whoever else so they can avoid their reach adds another dimension to kicking that will continue to play to our advantage.

The fact that he has done so well at this, so early in his career, is truly remarkable.
Love when the crowd starts chanting "block that kick!" ... and then we do.

A good measure of psychological competitive edge on the field always helps, too.
