Who steps up and shines at DB this week?

Postby CalallenStang » Tue Oct 19, 2010 11:55 am

With Moore out, who is going to step up and prove that they are ready to play DB at the Division I level against the pass-happy Cougars?

Will Bennie Thomas suddenly become Darrell Green? Will Parks come in and dominate?

Now, GSP can say I'm panicking, but I really don't see how we can stop UH without one of our DBs really having a breakout game.

More than any other position this situation could be a huge problem down the stretch for us. We can only hope for the best.

I honestly wish I could answer this question, but I can't. EEK

Don't just panic, jump off the ledge as well!

First, UH's O line has a real task Saturday. Our D line isn't Rice's. We can and will pressure an sack UH's Fr QB.

This pressure will take pressure off the corners.

Crawford has shown steady improvement and one imagines if Thomas or Parks is on the other side that Mason gives them help.

UH has a good offense to be sure but not as good with Keenum out and they have not faced a CUSA D line/ LBs like ours.

Hopefully KP and Zach Line will be our best DB's. i.e. the best defense is a good offense. We should be able to run the ball and get sufficient pass protection given the injuries to the Coogs' d-line.

The question is does Mason dial up pressure to make their QB get rid of the ball quickly aka force him to make mistakes?

or

Does he let the front 7 go to work and have Sorrell/Banjo shade over toward BT or Parks?

Agreed ponyte and we will have to see Crawford really take a major step up this week, as he is our key. That's exactly why we bring in Junior College transfers.....the freshman like Parks will continue to take some lumps because thats what they do, but don't break us.
That long 3rd down play by Navy last week was covered all the way down field by Reed, a Linebacker and he should have had help from a deep safety, so lets not have that kind of mistake again this week.

I think Mason dials up the pressure this week to compensate for the holes in the secondary. The best thing to do with a freshman QB is to put some serious pressure on him. If Ja'Gared can put a big hit on the QB if the first quarter (like he did against Navy in the fourth quarter) then the QB will be rushing all day.

We are definitely going to see Mason dial up the pressure this weekend. It will be up to Piland to make some plays.

Fortunately UH does not have the tallest receivers. Most of their starters are 5’8”-5’10” with only James Cleveland at 6’2”. As long as we match Crawford up with Cleveland and leave Beanie to the other shorter guys we might be alright. Beanie REALLY struggles with tall receivers.

I vote we put JG Davis back at DB for a few plays. Have him play off the ball deep, and get a full head of steam on some unsuspecting WR on a button-hook. After they pick up the pieces, that should give all the other receivers something else to think of.
