After another step backward, what's next for UH?

The Bayou Bucket is in the tender loving care of the Rice Owls.

That's the latest of a litany of tell-tale signs of just how horribly amiss things have gone for the Houston Cougars. Remember how Case Keenum vowed to his teammates that he'd never let them lose again, how players talked heading into this season about winning them all, how fans were fantasizing about Bowl Championship Series scenarios?

Halfway into the 12-game schedule, the Cougars are trying to keep their heads up and their helmets about .500. Less than 11 months after rolling up a 59-0 halftime lead against the Owls, UH lost the rematch.

Lost to a 1-5 Rice team.

Lost to a Rice team that was winless this season against opponents not named North Texas.

Fifty-nine points better than the Owls at the end of November 2009 (73-14). Three points worse than the Owls (34-31) in the middle of October 2010.

"Obviously," UH coach Kevin Sumlin said, "we took a step backward."
