Is June Jones doing enough personally to sell SMU football?

Postby George S. Patton » Wed Oct 27, 2010 8:43 pm

Is he?

I don't know the answer to that. I know he's made some summer speaking engagements and so forth. But how do people feel about this?

Is that something he's not comfortable doing because he's pretty shy going in public?

Is that something he should be doing regardless?

Should Rinebold be the real spokesman and sell beyond what he does via the Twitter?

I'd really like to know.

My belief is if you're making $2 million a year to coach a Division I football team, you don't need to be holed up in your office and your practice field. I want him to put together the best gameplan every week. But when you're the head coach, you got more on your plate.

We just need to win for a few years in a row. Getting to a bowl game this year is critical. June is trying to win to get back that lost generation. It's going to take time and wins. June is doing what he can. GSP, I hope you are not whining about attendence. :)

"via the Twitter"? is that something you access on your internet machine via the world wide intrawebs?

This post is based on ignorance and nothing more. Coach Jones is a great spokesman for the program.
Donate some money for a marketing budget, Gomer, and I'm sure he'd do even more.

Okay, THAT was funny!

I made the mistake of telling someone to tape something off TV the other day and he called me on it. Ah, DVR has SO changed my life for the better.

Maybe Alex Lifeson can answer this question.

No one else has.

You answered your own question -- he is being paid to coach.

There's more to it than that.

There's always more but the main reason you get paid the big bucks is getting Ws. Get too many Ls and you're not doing anything.

We see him every Monday at the luncheons, we see him on the weekly CBSTV show he agreed to be involved with, he speaks at Country Clubs and civic groups during the year( I went to several), he travels during the off season around the state for his football camps and speaks to SMU Alumni groups around the country( LA, Houston NY that I know of) and goes to fund raising dinners with SMU followers around Dallas. (Bobs Chophouse for one that is a blast)
He's really not shy, just low key and dry and he's actually pretty glib and handles himself well publicly.
During the Football season, I would doubt that he can or has time to do more. Name another D-1 football coach that does more DURING the season?
