No win at Tulane this weekend. No bowl for SMU.

Postby George S. Patton » Thu Oct 28, 2010 8:27 am

That's just how I see it. SMU's postseason hopes pretty much depend on this game in New Orleans.

I want the Mustangs to win them all. If they win, then they're in really good shape.

Still, this group needs to figure it out and decide what kind of football team it wants to be. SMU is good enough to win these games. The Mustangs are also inconsistent enough in EVERY phase of the game to where they have kinda turned into their own worst enemy.

You learn more about a football program and the people within it in terms of character when it's dealing with adversity. Well, this group definitely has some adversity.

We're about to find out what this team is made of.

Should be an interesting final month of the season.

Mathematically, yes. Sure, they can win the last 3. Will they? If they lose to Tulane, then who knows where this goes.

But if they lose this game, you could have some real confidence problems in the locker room. Half of the game is how you are mentally prepared to play.

They were not mentally ready to play against Houston -- even before the rain delay.

On the first two or three possessions, count how long it takes KP to release the ball. If it's 2 seconds on most throws except for long ones (3 seconds), we're good.

If that's not the case, the game will be a challenge.

I guess you could call it panic.

But it's not my problem. It's their problem.

6 wins and we are bowl eligible but don't we really need 7 wins to guarantee a bowl game? If we can't beat Tulane then we are not likely to beat UTEP and certainly not E. Carolina. I assume we will be Marshall at home so that is 5 wins. 6 wins would be the win against Tulane. I guess we are looking at win 3 of 4 to ensure a bowl game. I don't like our chances. This season sputtered with a hard non-conference schedule (starting the season on the road against Tech, at Navy, and TCU). Meanwhile, other teams in our league had easier non-conference schedules to help get wins towards bowl eligibility. Several players were academically ineligible that would have either started or played a lot. I believe 2 players left the team due to trouble with the law. I am disappointed with the defense not forcing more turnovers and the special teams. The lack of a punt return team has hindered this team as well as the kick off return coverage. Can SMU win 3 of 4? Sure. Will they? Probably not.....just trying to be realistic here. I hope I am wrong.

we will beat tulane utep and marshall. they are all terrible.
six is bowl eligible but does not guarantee a bowl for an nonaq school-so we most likely have to get to seven.

If we don't beat Tulane, I won't watch another game.

I believe you`ll beat all of them and then come play us in Hawaii and then get beat. ;-)
Just kidding. Would love you guys to come here on Christmas day. It would be a good game of high powered offenses. Good luck Ponies!

Aloha!

Our high powered offense has been anything but, which is why everyone has been so crotchety lately. Hawaii would laying a whuppin' down on us unless we can get things up to potential

Billy Joe don't jump off the Tallahatchie bridge. But in all seriousness I see what you are saying. I also agree that at this stage of our program we don't need a bunch of hard non conference games. We need to go to several bowl games in a row, especially for recruiting purposes. Next year we may go 1-3 in non conference (again) forcing us to win 6 conference games to go to a bowl. That is not good IMO.
