Question For Those Who Attended the Tulane Game

Postby San Antonio Mustang » Wed Nov 03, 2010 2:08 pm

I am wondering what happened in the first half. Tulane amassed huge rushing yards. Were our players out manned or out schemed? Did any of our guys have a particularly bad half? Was Fraizer's and Moore"s absence responsible? What did you observe?

Thanks

Based on what people are saying about the game, is that we ran a scheme to stop the pass. As you can guess from the yards gained, they didn't pass. As June always does, we made adjustments.

addressed at the lunch on Monday also, so my response won't include what was said then

but..

one thing that's been said was we came out expecting Tulane to throw it...and they didnt. That led to a lot of Tulane being past the first level before we broke down to stop the run. Also, the 3-4 needs linemen to occupy the double-team as opposed to working away from a double team (gap responsibility)..this was an area that improved as the day went on.

All that said, the freshman RB Orleans Darkwa or whatever his name is looked impressive to me

June also woke up his team at half time.

Remember the Nevada Bowl Game. We can play like that.

you had to post this here, as opposed to emailing the 4 people who were actually at the game?

Tulane's only real home field advantage these days is that the Super Dome is a mausoleum on game day and opponents sometime fail to get psychologically ready for the game.

I don't know, Tulane shoved it down our throats physically at times. Even in the fourth quarter after our adjustments, they drove down the field effortlessly only to stall at the 10 or so on that bad interception they threw in the end zone. If they punched that in, it would have been tied at 24.
I would like to think their ability to run was mostly due to scheme, but that doesnt explain how their runners were basically able to fall forward for 3-5 yards even after initial contact. Real sluggish tackling and tulane has a pretty big offensive line. The real issue i think is we have a defense with some tired legs at this point in the year due to lack of depth and not having a bye week yet. Worst part about our schedule this year is no bye week in the middle of the season.

Combination of good Tulane RB/expecting pass/general sluggishness.
I've also wondered the last two games if the team just needs a week off to catch their breath and rest.

Our defense was like swiss cheese against the run --- 8-10 yards per carry.

Look for Buckram to do the same on Sat.

for the first 6-7 games of the season, we were pretty good against the run. for the past 2-3 games, we are getting carved up. Why the change? only logical explanation to me is that fatigue and injuries have caught up to our starters. hope they get a second wind this week, bye week next week and finish strong.

Lack of depth combined with fatigue and nagging injuries add up to a marginal defensive performance. Also give Navy and Tulane some credit for good running attacks which challenged our lack of depth. Couple that with an offense that too often went 3 and out or 6 and out and the D had little rest.

Also wanted to point out that we don't do well against the hurry up offense. Our guys don't get set and don't seem to be ready for the play to start. Same thing against Houston.
