mostly about the NFL but a nice little story about SMU and beating UT about 3/4th down.(Caveat: "a lot of old Alumni" don't belong in the Locker Room)

Pretty cool interview with Eric..love the question about SMU and his answer below....the last sentence tells it all:

LAist: Going way back in your past, SMU has also started to turn things around since their death penalty.

ED: Golly, you’re talking about going way back. I’ll tell you a quick story. When I was in college it was my senior year. We played the University of Texas in Austin and we beat them 30-17. And a lot of our old alumni came in the locker room, and they were crying. Some of them were walking on walkers and crutches, and they were like, “I’ve been waiting 25 years to see this day,” or, “I’ve been waiting 30 year for this day to beat these Longhorns down here.”

I’ll never forget it. I said to my best friend at that time, still my best friend, “I hope this isn’t it us one day. We’ve been waiting 30 years to see our school win.” Lo and behold, I am that guy now. I am one of those old guys. We got the death penalty I have been waiting 20 years for my school to win. They finally went to a bowl game last year, I was so happy. I just hope they keep improving. I’m really proud of June Jones and my school.

my only dog in this hunt is that I think CJ is a terrible announcer

I think a lot of posters are down on CJ because he has openly done very little for SMU and in fact has 'bad mouthed' the Ponies some of his announcing gigs. IMO.

GO PONIES!!!

Good-he said what should have been said about 15 years ago. This all started with the Copeland era Mustang Club suckups that didn't like James pointing out the truth. Eric Dickerson said the same things. Lance McIllhenny was critical too. Why weren't the rest of you critical of SMU's half-assed commitment to athletics

Hot-button alert..

In truth - i think everyone was critical and apathetic about athletics during the Copeland era. I think people aren't big fans of CJ because he was just like us.. critical and apathetic.

How many of us were told to stay away from the school and the program?

Sorry but I wasn't aware that CJ was told to stay away. ED has been far more supportive.
I have no axe to grind with CJ. I am just suprised that he has done so little for SMU.

GO PONIES!!!

He served on the Committee to find June Jones. Orsini officially thanked Craig James in the press conference-didn't play as big a role as Dickerson but he has supported the process. He's got a day job on Saturdays

Pre death penalty players from the hey days were encouraged by Bennett not to come around in order not to relive the days that brought the demise of the program. Jones has embraced them and look at the progress and assistance that is taking place.
