Seeking people's honest answer on this question

Postby George S. Patton » Mon Nov 08, 2010 10:05 am

Do you believe June Jones is held accountable enough for what does and does not happen in a game?

Or do you believe that he basically gets a lot of hands off treatment because when things are going poorly, the blame is usually shifted in another direction?

Everybody knows where I stand on him. As a refresher, I don't like his offense. I don't like him personally. But if he can't get the program to greater heights, then terrific because that's all that matters and it really doesn't matter what I think. It's what the kids in the program think.

So if you think there's a bias in this thread, that's up to you. And if you want to come after me for this, I can't stop you.

But I'd like people to step back and really think about this and see if he is a teflon coach or not.

Food for thought.

P.S.
In spite of my feelings toward him, I stepped up and forked over a pretty decent amount of coin to SMU to retain my season tickets because it was the school that came first. And it will always be that way regardless of who is the football program's steward.

Why do you think he wants to take jobs at places like Hawaii or SMU and was considering the Duke job. He likes the ability to do things his way and build without any real pressure.

This plays into whether he gets enough credit/blame on what goes on in the game. He has a system and he is unwilling to compromise it because he knows it works. The fact that the teams he takes over have been so downtrodden means he has a big buffer zone and any thing he does usually gets rubber stamped as the wins come.

General....the problem with your question is that as a "fan", there is just very little information available to have anything other than an "uneducated" opinion. How can anyone on the outside know if he is held accountable and to what degree. My guess for any head coach in this day and time is that a certain number of wins are needed and if the program is not making progress then a change will be made. Having said that, a program like SMU needs to give a coach like June ample leeway because of the poor SMU track record and the poor support which has dwindled over the years. The unexpected year 2 results may have raised expectations too high for a team that is still trying to build depth through recruiting and having a pretty tough time building a trust with Texas High School Coaches while not taking the juco route and losing some players to injury and academic issues. Accountability would be wins along with graduating players and recruiting guys who can handle the rigors of D1 football and the academic side,(not just keeping guys eligible) but graduating! Lastly, the players staying out of trouble. Us fans need to do our part by spreading the good word and filling the seats at Ford. The sooner everyone buys into it the sooner we will be in bcs bowls.

Very true but people are prone to shower a coach with too much praise or too much blame -- deserved or undeserved. That's the way it works.

Dude, seriously? Isn't the point of an offense to put points on the board? And does this offense not do that?

And I cannot believe anyone could not like the guy... To me, he's the most likable head coach imaginable.

Not currently.

I think I give JJ a fair amount of credit/blame. He should get credit for reviving this program and for ratcheting up recruiting. He should get blame for not having the team motivated to play against UTEP.

But what people? The pundits on this message board? Not exactly a random unbiased sampling, and does it really matter whether we pour on the accolades one week and the crticism the next? We are just fans, and that's what fans do.

The people who really have the right to hold Jones "accountable" are the ones who pay his salary, and we have no idea what goes on behind those doors. That's all I'm saying.

I'll be honest and say that I had expected a 2 Million Dollar a Year former National Coach of the Year would have "ratcheted" up the recruiting a little bit more and have had "longer coattails" especially in Texas. But he made it [deleted] himself by hiring mostly coaches that had to build their connections in Texas from scratch. Alot of you-if you were being honest thought so too-because I remember the predictions when he was first hired. I think he's only now starting to get bites from the prospects he thought he could get from the start. We are starting to nibble at Top 100 type kids. We need to get a bunch more to take this program to the level we need to start beating the schools we all want to beat and position SMU for a strong future. But when 123 fans care enough to watch SMU and UH play after a rain delay....

I don't have enough information to criticize Coach Jones. I wonder why substitutions are not made, but what I do not know that the Coach knows is health of the player, how he practices, etc. I also see Coach setting up defenses with certain play calls only to have execution fail. Now is the failure the result of his or the staff's coaching or is it the result of the talent and commitment level of the player? What I can judge about this team, in what is really Jones's second year of recruiting, is lit is ight years ahead of the last PB team. This team can be competitive with anyone on the schedule which includes the #3 team in the nation. I also see a team that is inconsistent in execution and has not recovered emotionally from the Navy defeat. What I don't know is the level of physical injury incurred at Navy. I also do not believe we can sneak up on anyone. I also see our talent clearly a notch below the BCS schools. We are not as big or fast as those schools. Are these the Coach's fault? I don't know. I do see adjustments and coaching going on during the game. So there are alot of positives and some negatives I can see and alot I do not know. Who is to say that if we put in some of our backups we would not be in worse shape? Certainly I do not think any fan knows the answer to that question. Are some of the negatives we see the result of decisions by the coaching staff? Certainly they could be. It stands to reason that some are, but I don't have enough information or football knowledge to say they are or are not. I can say it is my opinion that this is the best coaching staff SMU has had in the last 50 years. Will it result in SMU wining a national championship? Don't know, but unless the BCS goes to a playoff system I doubt that any coaching staff could take SMU to a national championship. I do expect this coaching staff to be able to recruit enough talent to make us a routine favorite to win the conference and to routinely go to a BCS bowl. That is my hones answer.

Certainly not on Saturday, right? And it is an interesting point that while we're #18 in total net yards, we are #54 in points.

And that has to do with untimely penalties and turnovers. We've shot ourselves in the foot in nearly every game we have played this year. Against Houston it was the INT in the redzone. Against Tulane it was the Zach Line fumble on the 5. Against UTEP it was the clipping penalty.

crappy field position too. We've had two 99 yard drives for TDs. Under JJ's formula, 200 yards should be 20 points.

We lose the field position battle. 4th and 1 on their 40, we punt, presumably to win field position. Punt goes into the endzone (or worse) and we have a net 20 yard or less punt. Our d finally gets a stop on the 45 or so, and they pin us inside the 10, or we muff the punt.

true-its also true we have one real play making home run threat meaning we have to work hard for our scores. Last year we had 3.

We were in a deep ditch with little light shining in when June arrived. He has had to turn around a team, a student body, an administration and the D-FW football world. He has taken this on his shoulders and except for the larger football community, he has succeeded. Give him the two more years of recruiting build up and we will be a regular member of the top 25. Just wrong to judge the overall coaching success coming off a flat game in El Paso.
As to personal style, I think he is a nice break from the narrow bandwidth most college coaches occupy.
