If the Cowboys came calling would June Jones answer?

Postby ThadFilms » Tue Nov 09, 2010 6:00 pm

I've been thinking about how June will choose to leave his chosen profession. My thoughts are he'll stay with the Mustangs until he gets them to the top and then run for governor of the state of Hawaii. Or he'll coach SMU until the right NFL fit comes calling.

I don't think he would leave SMU now, it's not his style... but coaching the Cowboys in the state they are right now I would see as one of those "right fit" kind of situations. Jones strikes me as a "why on earth would you take that job kind of guy".

If the Cowboys were in this position 3 years from now I would see him thinking about accepting the challenge and it would be something he would leave SMU for - and then after taking them to the Super Bowl go back to coaching Hawaii for three seasons and then run for governor.

But right now, I think he's a lock to stay at SMU. He's too into what he does to leave a job unfinished. But the Cowboys post is one that I think is just one of those what in the wide world of sports kind of jobs - JJ being a guy who loves to control everything and I mean JJ for both June and Jerry - how could that ever work? You can't tell me you ever thought June would come to SMU not once would that cross your mind. So I like to think outside the box on June's eventual departure... I still say he either retires a Mustang or takes the right NFL job. Perhaps the Jaguars move to LA in about 3 years. I could see him taking that job if offered.

They don't want to run the one trick pony offense.
And if he tried to change the Star into a palm tree .....

If he wanted an NFL job he could have taken it when he went to Hawaii.

Seems like he doesn't want the BS and politics associated with NFL/Big college programs.

They'd be the Harborarborboys.

...

And couch 'em is right... he had the San Diego Super Chargers job in hand. But he has way more politics at SMU than I think he ever expected. That's what happens when you get the DP. You cannot ever, ever let football (or any sport) get out of hand again.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - the ONLY school that could ever get the DP in the future is SMU. They will not give it again, save for SMU. Why? Because SMU is the only school who can say "you've already given us the DP and your not, not ever going to give to these schools so you can go stick it"... and that is why the SMU brass have to be ever, and in many cases, over-diligent in keeping the reigns on the football program.

We are beyond lucky to have June Jones. This talk of the game having passed him by is the biggest crock of you know what since they invented the crock pot. He is willing to take on the challenge to stand toe-to-toe with the administration... and the great thing is (Gluestick and Alpo aside) he is a man of the highest character. Sure you could say he's smug and there's a story back from his Hawaii days that I won't bring up (because I think that salacious stories just come out for the mere fact that they are salacious and not actual news), but everything that June stands for in intercollegiate athletics is worth standing for.... and we have him on our side. And kids want to play for him. You absolutely need a guy like that. We couldn't ask for a better coach to deal with this situation than June Jones.

(Sure, I'm a Peruna guy myself... but you have to step back and understand that JJ comes in as a fixer... he didn't grow up with Peruna running across the field. I actually think he is thrilled that there is a segment of the community miffed about it... seriously. It shows there are fans that are passionate.)

I don't know what is going on with this fog... but thank god we've got Sterling coming back.

SMU hasn't got a clue what politics over college football are.

A month ago there was a 7-0 coach, with no major off-the-field incidents going on, fighting for his job and reputation. Last year a school pushed out a guy who had had 31, count them, 31 straight winning seasons. What do you think the coach of Texas, ANY coach of Texas, goes through? Anybody want to be in Mack Brown's shoes right now?

Jones knows what the deal is, and at this point in time, it's HIS program, minor, and yes, they are minor, academic issues aside.

And, oh, by the way, he's paid more here than some NFL coaches are.

No, he will not go to the Cowboys.

(And no, the Cowboys will not call)

I fake injuries on hot dates that go down the toilet. I hope you boo me in the future for that kind of poop.

Note: I don't have hot dates. They are all cold. By cold I mean "non-existent"/failed before they begin.

As long as SMU is the adversary than yes, of course he does!

Just kidding Stallion, you know I love your acerbic wit and contrarion positions. HBPD and I routinely toast the fact that you actually have facts to back up your opinions. Unlike the rest of us shlubs who post on here like it's our "own personal MySpace".

Wonder what it will be like back in Texas when I have no one at arms (Marina Pub's) length to toast.

Thad is correct in what he writes. JJ is a good man as a good and honorable man.

Does Stallion play Handel on the piano or just conduct the orchestra?

Love your ponys.
Someday they will be Mustangs.

Given how transient the coaching industry is, never marry yourself to any coach. Because he's not married to your school the same way you are.

It's not worth it.

All I ever ask of the coaches who come through SMU is to make their respective program better than how they found it for the next guy.
