Last night, old buddy passed through town which called for a game of Bowl Bound, the college dice board game. 1983 Aubrun soundly defeated the 1966 SMU team, 29-7. Smu held tough but could not corral Bo.

The 66 defense was essentially the same quality group that lost in the 67 (68) Cotton bowl to Georgia. Despite greats like Ronnye Medlen at tackle, All-America John La Grone at nose tackle, Billy Bob Stewart and Jerry Griffin at linebackers the Dawg ran us off the field. I am afraid Bo would have done the same.

1966 SWC Championship. Lost to Georgia in 1967 Cotton Bowl (that I believe was actually played on December 31, 1966.). Here's is DMN game story
http://www.mmbolding.com/bowls/Cotton_1967.htmBTW a pretty famous NFL Championship between the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys was played in the Cotton Bowl on Sunday January 1, 1967. Pretty big but disappointing weekend

I almost have to believe it was played on January 1. My HS football team won the state championship and as a reward they took us to the Cotton Bowl for that game. I recall very well this small town Arkansas kid witnessing New Years Eve in downtown Dallas. It was quite a spectacle. Unless they celebrated New Years Eve on the 30th, the game was on the 1st.
EDIT*** Stallion is correct. I checked an old calendar. We must have gone down the day of the game and then spent the night on the 31st, and come home on Sunday.

No it was December 31, 1966-see the football program from my link-may have to enlarge it. Guess they had never seen a Friday Nite in Big D. With an NFL Championship and Cotton Bowl it was probably a big weekend

You were correct (see my edit), but it was not just a big night in Dallas. It was definitely New Years Eve. A man was killed around the corner from our Hotel by being thrown through a plate glass window. Bumper to bumper cars with barely any movement. Some hot girls in a convertible were sitting in traffic below our window and started yelling at some guys in the car behind them. One guy got out, went up to the girls and smashed a beer bottle in the face of the girl driver and went and got back in his car. It was a fascinating night to behold.

The 1967 game was moved to Saturday, December 31, 1966, due to the Dallas Cowboys hosting the NFL Championship Game at the stadium on New Year's Day, a Sunday. (Note: The other major bowl games that year --- the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, and Orange Bowl - were played on Monday, January 2.)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotton_Bow ... me_resultsWonder why they didn't play the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 2. Worried about the field being too torn up, I guess.

Georgia scored the first touchdown in that Cotton Bowl game with SMU and SMU responded with a field goal. As one of the newspapers said in covering the game, "Tt seemed to matter." Vince Dooley, who was one of the great poor mouthers, said of SMU, "We've never played a team with seven All Conference players before," and I suppose kind of laughed up his sleeve.
Had to give Fry credit for a gooe coaching job the next year though!

Mac White had hurt his knee against Arkansas and was not very effective running with the ball. That really crippled the SMU offense in the Cotton Bowl game.

I hardly remember New Years Eve 1966. But not for a good or exciting reason:I was only four months old.

I was 8 years old at the time, and desperately wanted to go...my father, wise as he was, had two appointments that day and told me we would go the 'next time'...1983 we froze and watched as SMU finally returned.
Baylor game was still the best in '66...
