Strange DMN Headline

In the C-USA section on page 6CC is the headline in fairly large print:

Tulsa grinds out victory, now ahead of SMU for first in C-USA West

It is an AP story, but I assume someone in the DMN added that little SMU flavor to it, except it is totally wrong,

SMU and Tulsa are tied and SMU beat Tulsa, so we are out in front for the time being.

Nice going DMN, you take a swipe at SMU that is not even correct.

I don't understand the standings either. CBS Sports lists Tulsa above SMU also. We both have identical conference records, but Tulsa has a better overall record. Is that why they are reported ahead of SMU?

Probably just orders the standings by conference record and then overall record as the next tie breaker, which Tulsa is better than us.

I really don't have a problem with that, just a headline that says Tulsa moves ahead of us, when actually, that was exactly the result SMU needed to be back in the driver's seat.

Pretty sloppy.

Agreed. The DMN headline writer probably thought he/she was doing us a favor by mentioning us when in fact it made the headline inaccurate. It will be nice when we are so relevant that even the copyboy knows about us.

With the rapid decline of printed media there probably won't be a 'copyboy' by the time we are that relevant. :P

GO PONIES!!!

Some reporting services use the "Has the game passed the coach by?" scale as the first tie breaker.

Whatever flunky the AP hired to cover the game got Tulsa's conference record wrong in the story. They had them at 5-2. I'm sure the DMN editor/headline writer read that and took a quick glance at SMU's record, thus the incorrect headline.

I'm sure the only reason that game got a headline in the first place was because of its implications for SMU. The DMN gets half-credit for at least acknowledging it in regards to SMU, and the screw-up is really the AP's fault.

How the heck an AP writer gets the record wrong - the most basic and easily checked info in any game story - is beyond me.

Probably thought overall record was used as a tie-breaker over head-to-head result, I guess.

At least the DMN admitted it and fixed it.

I sent them a rather tersely worded comment through their corrections form online. They emailed me back admitting the mistake and said they would fix it.

Then today Kate has a paragraph stating how we control our own destiny.
