This should interest us all since everyone has an opinion on the DMN. It appears the DMN is moving towards charging for their online content. Details are sketchy but the Observer is reporting this: "The News is expected to make a preliminary announcement soon about premium pricing related to its website." Soon as in "today": The paper just posted to its website details about its forthcoming iPhone and iPad apps -- part of its "next generation" look due to hit virtual newsstands December 14. On the same day the paper will begin offering "subscriber content," defined as "exclusive stories on dallasnews.com, iPhone and iPad written by our journalists you can't get anywhere else."
Speculation is that the DMN hopes to have everything behind a pay wall eventually. The question is, will anyone here pay for it? I only subscribe to the Sunday paper, but I read the "paper" online everyday. If I was basing this solely on SMU content, I don't think it would be worth it. I am curious to see what they think they can get. I predict this will meet a fate similar to the cue cat, and this time next year we will see all free content again.

i may be the only one on here who still takes the paper newspaper. i just got my bill for the coming year. i don't know if i will take it or not. it's hard for me to give it up. i like looking through a real newspaper. i feel like every year is the last for the paper edition.

Much like the smell of napalm in the morning, I love my ink stained fingers after reading my paper each day. I am not going to enjoy the retirement of daily edition deliveries but I feel it is eminent.

For me trying to read an online newspaper is pure hell. I love the print media but it is shrinking fast.

I don't read online media. I prefer my morning coffee and the REAL newspaper in my hands, casually scouring the pages.

I remember we didn't make much money....it was really important to get the great tips from your special customers...especially around the holidays! I remember when you got it down and you could throw the paper one handed from your bike and right onto the porch.....not under the bushes.

We had two papers like Dallas when the Times Herald existed. I had the afternoon gig and it was not too bad. The only pay we got was tips and that was when we collected payment door to door. If someone did not pay, we were responsible.
Later my brother got a morning route and I had to fill in on occasion. That was not as much fun.
I did mine on foot and would place the paper at the front door leaning on the wall so the owner could open their screen or storm door and only have to bend down a little and never had to step out of their house.

I can't believe you guys waste your time with paper newspapers. It's so slow and limiting.
I get on DMN.com and dallasobserver.com to check for any local stories of interest. That's DMN's only hope. Why would I waste my time reading their 2nd rate national news? I can go to bbc news for that, or, if I want worthless celebrity BS posing as real news, cnn.com. Or right wing slant fox news, or ultra, ultra, ultra left wing slant, msnbc.
If I want a more in depth view on any one story, I can find all the info I need from various sources by searching for that one topic. I'm not limited to the slanted, limited view of the DMN. Having seen stories in that paper related to work-related projects, I can tell you that you aren't getting the detailed, accurate, or intelligent version of events.

I love the print versions of the WSJ and the NYTimes. I read the DMN daily for many, many, years, but the editorial content is so limited, I consider it a waste of money. Agreed, I like to hold a newspaper in my hands. But the DMN? The amount of space given to SMU is shameful.

I use my internet for what it was intended.......porn.
That said believe or not this old man can read the online papers also. I just happen to like to start my morning with a cup of coffee and a paper paper. As I have said before, my age allows me to wear black, knee high socks with shorts and sandals, and I can read my newspaper also, as long as it exists.

Having the news downloaded into my brain as it happens is pure hell. I prefer the days where I could enjoy my cup of coffee and feel the cool metal, plastic and glass of my iPad and read the online presence of what was left of the old dailies.

The parer route is one job I am glad I will never have again. You spent half your time trying to track down that one dead beat who made more money than everyone else in the neighborhood. Riding your bike around in the freezing rain before the sun comes up only to have to go to school afterwards.
I recently gave up a daily subscription and remarkably don't miss it. The internet is faster and more relevant to what I am searching for.
I will not give up my Sunday NYT subscription. That is all about spreading out with a cup of coffee and taking time for myself - away from the laptop, smart phone, any other communication device.
