Not the worst hire ever, he did manage to make Iowa State respectable for a little bit.

A stronger hire than any made by Copeland. Given the limited financial capabilities of NTSTC, I consider this a strong move on their part. His winning is inconsistent, but he is the opposite of Dodge in terms of experience at the college level.
Despite his scandal, I believe Fran would have been a better hire for NTSTC. His ties to Texas recruiting would be invaluable, and his name is recognizable. It is not as though NTSTC possesses tremendous talent, and simply lacks a general to direct their movements. No, it is a building project. And building requires recruiting.
Nevertheless, a reasonable hire. One that SMU would have envied until recently.

If this is true, it's a good hire at just the right time. He's got a proven track record of rebuilding a program. He comes from a program that's very good at recruiting. The new stadium with a new coach could give that whole program a "reboot" as it were. It won't happen overnight (don't we all know) but I think this has a reasonable chance of working out well.
Next up, to see what happens with UNT when all the conference shuffling is done. Though they turned down the WAC recently, one has to think they'll want to move to a better conference than the Sun Belt.

NTSTC will remain in the Sun Belt, and would only be able to join another conference if SMU leaves CUSA.

Dan McCarney is a good Coach and he did a pretty good job at Iowa State. McCarney did not have the best talent at ISU, but he beat a lot of teams at ISU he probably shouldn't have. Not a bad choice for UNT. They will improve.

Very strong recruiter-he got a lot of kids in Texas at Iowa St-also has strong Florida ties. Iowa St hasn't recruited Texas very well since he left. I think he actually won a Big 12 North Co-Championship at Iowa St which is quite an accomplishment.

Does this mean we can now get rid of June and hire "the Stallion candidate" Todd Dodge? Oh joy...

Lucky Dan, he gets to coach in the first all eco friendly stadium. What makes it eco friendly? IS it made of cardboard?

NTSTC also arranged for him to get discounts at Walmart and the local 7-11s. Seems their president has major connections to those stores in denton.
GO PONIES!!!

I'm surprised they didn't offer it to Canales---------they certainly have played much better since he took over and understood he was liked by players/fans.
