Kelly Turner: this guy is a beast

Postby MiracleOnMockingbird » Mon Nov 29, 2010 8:55 pm

If you still have the East Carolina game on tape, check out the SMU touchdown in overtime.

Turner makes contact with a defensive tackle at about the one-half yard line and drives him all the way back onto the letters "Carolina" a couple yards deep in the end zone!

Love it.

That is why they call him "The belly of the beast" on the radio. I remember against Wazzu he was pulling to the right on a run. He leveled a defender about 5 yards like Earl Cambell going into the end zone. he then wrecked the next guy in his way. Pure muscle

Kelly's been a pleasant surprise. He came to SMU undersized and has put in a lot of work in the weight room to get to where he's at. I'm really glad he got on the field this year for us

If I recall our recruiting expert (Stallion) thought he was a throw away offer.

That would be incorrect sir.

This would be a good time to say (for the first time ever) that you were wrong.

Also important is his work at the "training table". Rusty Taco has a taco eating challenge named after him.

From Facebook: Rusty Taco The Kelly Turner Taco Eating Challenge has a new champion. First the record was tied by Devin Wallace with 16, then the same afternoon the record was broken by Jose Reyes who inhaled 17 tacos! Kelly, are you going to let them get away with this?

Hopefully he waits until after the season to answer the challenge

Stallion is no recruiting guru anymore than anyone else on this board. He also said Cole Beasley was a below average receiver so I'm not the least bit surprised by his immediate analysis of Kelly Turner. I mean why would a coach like June Jones offer him anyway right? The guy uses his rivals subscription to climax to and thinks their grades are set in stone.

He's another one of Phil's guys. O line is covered in them.

its amazing how all you guys can come up with any proof of any of these statements that I allegedly make

Never said "Coaching doesn't matter" even though it is stated a million times over an over. I've challenged people to find that quote numerous times over the years-nobody has. I said numerous times over the years that "the reason that SMU was not competitive with our natural and traditional rivals was not because of coaching but because SMU didn't have a competitive model that would allow them to recruit the athletes necessary to compete." Big Difference-some of you have simple minds and can't distinguish words. Oh and by the way-no one ever proved my statement wrong by winning with that uncompetitive Model in the first 19 years. June Jones never takes this Job with the Model we were talking about-in fact June Jones has proven every criticism ( I had at least 10 major recruiting points) I had about that Model to be true-because SMU changed ever one of them.

Never said: "Smu will rue the Day that they didn't hire Todd Dodge". Hell he wasn't even my No. 1 pick who was Dennis Franchione-so why in the hell would I say that. I listed Todd Dodge among a list of about 8 candidates and in some other posts. I've challenged Mr [deleted] several times to come up with that quote that he describes as "circa 2007". He's never responded. Those posts are all still availiable. Put up or Shut Up. You won't because you can't find it-its not there.

I've said Cole Beasley is a possession receiver. I did rate him a 4 on a 10 point scale before the 2009 season. He hadn't proved anything yet other than he could drop lots of passes including game winners. Based on last season I think he should be rated higher but I always downgrade players until they prove it. I said SMU's large WR Class in 2008 of about 6 recruits which most on here were lauding as incredible might produce 1 quality possession receiver. I definitely got that right. That's what Cole Beasley is-a possession receiver-every team needs them. He is the only one of the 6 that has even seen the field extensively-1 out of 6 ain't very good in recruiting. Any starting inside receiver would catch a bunch of passes in this offense. SMU threw the ball 40 times Saturday-who else is going to catch the ball? Hey you think he's a NFL player-I don't think he's one of the Top 12 NFL prospects in the league at Receiver. He will never be a long ball threat. He's a threat to take it the distance when someone makes a mistake or forgets to cover. Cole Beasley's big games have come against Rice when they were about No. 120 in Pass Defense, Tulane when they were about 119 in Pass Defense and ECU when they were No. 120 in Total Defense. He wouldn't start for most Big 12 teams.

Oh and I'm sure I said Kelly Turner was a sleeper. Apparently every Coach and recruiting service thought so too. Sleepers sometimes contribute-you won't win many games recruiting a team of sleepers.

Think Turner blocked for Matt Stafford when Highland Park won state. Highland Park captain and state team, both polls as a senior. Not much of a sleeper to me, but yeah one of Phil's guys. That alone might not get you that first look in the Jones camp. Jones is going to favor his own recruits.

He was rated 5.1 2 stars by Rivals and 2 stars and unranked at his position by Scout. No offers reflected by either Rivals or Scout. He is listed by SMU as a 6-1 Offensive Guard. That's the definition of a "sleeper". Its a recruiting term-deal with it. Or ignore recruiting. It doesn't mean they never pan out.

My take on Kelly Turner is that he closely resembles:

here's a preseason list from CFN of the Top 12 receivers in the league. I'd definitely take Rubbottom out and replace him with Lance Lewis kid at ECU or that kid we just faced Aaron Dotson at Marshall. All these guys in the right offense put up big numbers and are better NFL prospects than Cole Beasley. But Beasley's a nice CUSA possession receiver. Part of the reason we aren't putting up June Jones numbers and barely have a Top 20 Passing Offense is because we need some improvement at Receiver.

80 catches and over 1,000 yards will do just fine for a "4 out of 10" on your scale. Thanks.

Still looking for that quote "circa 2007" in your trailer [deleted]. This is about the 3rd time I've challenged you on this.
