OS: Keys to UCF victory

-- Win in the trenches.

The Knights failed to convert third down consistently against Southern Miss three weeks ago, with the Golden Eagles dominating UCF's offensive line. SMU boasts another strong defense that will put heavy pressure on the Knights. UCF must create holes for the running backs and protect freshman quarterback Jeff Godfrey.

The defensive line also has to dominate SMU. Mustangs sophomore quarterback Kyle Padron enters the championship game with a left ankle injury, but he is expected to play. When Padron isn't aiming for the end zone, powerful sophomore running back Zach Line will be hunting for yards on the ground. UCF's undersized defensive line must use its speed effectively to force Padron into bad decisions and slow down Line.

-- Let Godfrey shine.

Godfrey has been a game-changer for the Knights all season. Offensive coordinator Charlie Taaffe has steadily heaped more on Godfrey's plate and he has handled it well. He may falter at times against SMU's defense, but the coaching staff has to keep letting Godfrey take calculated risks to win big.

-- Revive the pass defense.

UCF's secondary has typically been in the right spot to break up passes this season, but the Knights are inconsistent when it comes to contesting deep passes. SMU coach June Jones will attack the Knights' secondary early and often. UCF must step up the challenge and avoid giving up big plays.

-- Don't trust your kicker.

UCF junior kicker Nick Cattoi has struggled all season, hitting 9-of-18 on field goals and 44-of-47 extra points. Sophomore backup Jamie Boyle has missed both his field-goal attempts. Meanwhile, SMU has blocked six kicks this season. O'Leary said the kickers' inconsistency has already forced him to change the decisions he makes on game day. UCF has to play well enough to compensate for one of its biggest weakness or risk losing the game because of errant kicks.

This article makes me a lot more confident about SMU's chances.

I think we have to run some type of Spy on Godfrey to make sure he doesn't get out of the pocket and make plays. I'm looking at you T. Reed or JG Davis.

It's been a while since we've seen a blocked kick...calling Margus Hunt.

Hopefully, we can control TOP using a healthy dose of Z line against their undersized D-line, and short to intermediate passes to methodically drive down the field.

Proper preparation and execution. And a little blind luck.

Why does the luck need to be blind?

Because you can never see luck coming until it happens. Not that I really needed to explain it, mind you, but you asked.
