some of you old historians correct me if I'm wrong, but won't this be the 1st time SMU football has EVER played in an officially sanctioned league championship game? I think these games are a creation of the modern era with 12 member conferences and divisional play. We are going to witness a new chapter in SMU football history Saturday. I feel very fortunate knowing I will actually get to attend
Go Ponies!!!

well there wasn't a championship game for southwest conference, there's not a championship game for the WAC, and we haven't been to the USA championship game yet - so yes, first time in history!

Yes. Old SWC used to play a Championship in Basketball when teams finished tied at the end of the season. SMU played in one of those games against UT in Waco one year-UT won at the buzzer. Must have been Gene Phillips team.
Edit: actually it was 1965

I never thought I would be able to correct Stallion but I can now. SMU played Texas in Waco
for the SWC championship in 1972. Our team was led by forward Ruben Triplett who was the first
black to play for SMU's basketball team. I know this because I worked for the Daily Campus back then as a sportswriter and I was at the game. Texas did win, yes, and then beat Houston in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Gene Phillips, an excellent outside shooter, who later played for the Dallas Chapperal of the ABA, graduated in 1971.

I thought it was later too because I remember listening to the game, So it happened twice in Waco because I found a site that describes the 1965 game too.

I was at the game in Waco when our hoops team finished tied with Texas as SWC Champs; UT had a guy named Robinson who went off that night and beat us almost single handedly. Think it was 1971-2 season?
