1989-90 vs. 2002-03. Two periods when SMU had new coaches.

3-21 Bennett's overall two year record
3-19 Gregg's overall two year record

14.20 - Bennett's average points scored
17.45 - Gregg's average points scored

31.83 - Bennett's average points allowed
42.04 - Gregg's average points allowed

17.63 Benett's average differential
24.59 Gregg's average differential

Looks like Gregg gets the edge in overall winning percentage and scoring offense, while Bennett has the better defensive statistics and total scoring differential.

Overall, I'd say that Gregg played the much tougher schedule, but of course, that is a matter of opinion

There is no way you can compare Gregg to Bennett. Gregg had freshman and red shirt freshman only in his first year. He had the most restrictive admissions standards of the SMU return to football era. Gregg was a proven head coach who had been to the Super Bowl with the Bengals. He adapted his offensive scheme to the players. The team (and the school) cared about the game because they had seen what SMU would be like without football. Does anybody remember how soccor or BB was used for the annual homecoming event? If Gregg had stayed and not been forced to leave by Pye's restrictive policies, we might not be in the WAC today. :pinch:

Surely we can find something less relevant than this?

It would be hard. Leave it to a Baylorite - you would think they had enough to worry about in Waco.

SamIAm says Gregg had been to the Superbowl with the Bengals. The BENGALS? Is this the same Forrest Gregg from Sulphur Springs who starred all those years with the Green Bay Packers? Didn't know he ever went with the Bengals. Clarification?

The same Forrest Greg - coached the Bengals in the Superbowl, then got elevated to be SMU's football coach after the DP.

Gregg played 3-4 Div1AA teams in those 2 years.

Ponies had Top10-15 Ark beat with 8-10 min to go in 4th, and had the ball to win it at the end, but punted and ARK scored again.

Ah...and this is so worthless to compare...I will quit.

Who thinks this crap up? Somebody needs to go take down the Christmas lights or rake the leaves.

My Christmas stuff is already down so:

89 SMU Mustangs 20 Jason Wolfe, and Mitch
Gleiber catch Romo TD passes.

03 SMU Mustangs 9 Bennett's offense couldn't
hang double digits on HP
Middle School, but 89
defense couldn't shutdown
the HPMS offense either.

Leaves were raked before Christmas.

I toured Heritage Hall last fall when I bought my season tickets, and wasn't really impressed. I'd heard about them wanting personal memorable items being donated, but didn't see anything of the like.

So, I'm keepin all my neat stuff.
