Big Ten announces they are shutting down expansion
Big Ten Statement on Expansion

Dec. 5, 2010

The Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors (COP/C) held its winter meetings today in Park Ridge, Illinois. The following statement is issued by the Big Ten office on behalf of the COP/C.

This time last year, the COP/C believed that the time was right for the conference to explore the possibility of conference expansion and Commissioner James E. Delany was asked to provide recommendations for consideration over the next 12 to 18 months. The Big Ten began a thorough, deliberate evaluation and on June 11, 2010, the COP/C unanimously approved an application for membership from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Since that announcement, the conference has been actively engaged in incorporating Nebraska, both academically and athletically, into the fabric of the conference and all parties eagerly await the completed integration which will take effect in July, 2011.

During today's meeting it was decided that it was appropriate to focus completely on conference affairs at this time. "We have been thoroughly engaged in the process since last December," said COP/C Chair and Indiana University President Michael McRobbie. "Following detailed discussions at today's meeting, my colleagues and I can report that we believe that this process has reached its natural conclusion. We are pleased with the addition of Nebraska and look forward to working with our colleagues there in the years ahead."

Although the conference will continue to monitor the intercollegiate landscape, it will not be actively engaged in conference expansion for the foreseeable future and does not expect to be proactively seeking new members.

good move to add Nebraska to get to 12 and now hold a championship game; this could put some pressure on Big XII to schedule stronger non-conference opponents. Could help TCU get games with Texas or OU down the road?

So when do the Big X and Big XII swap naming rights? Oh, how awkward; a mathematically challenged group of Universities

The big 12 and Big Ten play more conference games now so if anything this make them more likely to schedule cupcakes.

and all the tradition that goes w/ the Big 10 Conf. name...tricky situation for both.

although it didnt stop the Big 10 from making that dumb logo w/ the "11" in it.

Neither conference is changing names anytime soon, there's too much money and pride tied up in the copyrights. And for the record:

The Big12 has 10 teams.

The Big10 has 12 teams.

The Big East just added a team from Texas.

The Pac10 just added a school in Colorado.

And the Mountain West is planning on adding Hawaii.

At this rate the only conference in the country whose name will make sense will be C-USA, which basically can do whatever the hell it wants.

Oh, how I wish we lived in a simpler, saner time.

We will probably add a team from Mexico.

UTEP is about as close as you can get to adding a team from Mexico. Right now, though no one wants to go to Juarez.
