Life after death: Pony Excess, from ESPN's "30 for 30" series, is a riveting film of local interest that will premiere at 8 p.m. Saturday -- immediately following the Heisman Trophy presentation (7 p.m.) on ESPN.

It's a look at SMU football and Dallas-Fort Worth as each appeared in the '80s, and it's not all pretty.

Greed, power and corruption get more than a cameo.

Former SMU stars Eric Dickerson and Craig James help publicize Pony Excess, directed by former SMU film school grad Thaddeus Matula. It's still the only NCAA football program to ever receive the "death penalty."

Tom Brokaw is seen in the film saying, "College football tonight has a new scandal..."

Sound familiar? It should. We'll probably have just gotten done watching Cam Newton pick up the Heisman.
