The colossal difference: Miami never got the DP, or really any substantial penalty until its program was allowed to dominate the national scene for years and years.
If Miami had gotten the DP instead of SMU, I wonder if Miami would be in C-USA, along with Baylor, while SMU would be in the Big 12.
Baylor would have still been in the Big 12. SMU didn't have anyone in the governor's mansion, or more importantly, the Lt. Gov's office, at the breakup of the SWC.
