Does anyone know of any players leaving, quitting, transferring? I just heard one of our receivers is transferring to a JUCO in Oklahoma. Who is it?

Don't know. All the insiders said that Bartel leaving was just the beginning of players quitting. Haven't heard of any yet.

I recall the insiders saying the Bartel defection was only the beginning of those being told "We'll help you find some place to go." And yes, there will be a few after this break and more at the end of the season. Aren't big name players, but younger guys I would have expected to help turn this program around.

It's not uncommon. Players get homesick, grow dissatisfied with lack of playing time. It happens at UT, TCU, everywhere.

I would bet that it doesn't happen at ut as much as SMU and tcu - since ut is prone to telling players not to the door hit them on the way out (as opposed to the players leaving on thier own). I have also heard that schools like ut reassign or revoke scholarships to players a little more often (but I have no quotes on that). I think that SMU and tcu honor their shcholarships to players through injurys, etc.

UT generally culls 7-8 slackards a year from their roster. You'll start hearing about them any day now.

Rumor has it that the receiver you are talking about is Mark Hodges. Apparently he wants to get a shot to play QB again, the position he played in HS.

Ya'll wanta here abig-O chant from me!!! ********MUSQUITE STANG**MUSQUITE STANG**MUSQUITE STANG**U-----KNOW. Hey that was fun comin up with that chant. I wished it could have caught on but It has moved on. Its ture Mark Hodges is transfering, But it is not without some pain. He has made many friends among the students, teachers, coaching staff and mostly the Players of SMU. He and I want to wish Coach Bennett, his staff and again, most of all, the players. I am very proud of him and it was pretty cool to see :shifty: :thumbupcool: that he could still hit hard enough to even share time with D1 T.E's. I wish he could have gotten more of a shot at QB. He can really Move and throw but Football isn't a fair game. A player has to be in the right spot at the right time in order to show case they're talent. Some tid bits for the message board people, from him are, 1. Bartel isn't a bad QB or person, he's just high strung. 2. Wallis isn't a bad QB or person he understands the plays better than anyone. 3. Thanks to Phillips for those nice throws and good luck to the crew. Hodges will be playing for East Central University of Oklahoma. A division II, north zone, Lone Star Conference College. He will be playing QB.

My brother, and I saw him play, and I believe win (my memory fails me) the playoff game against Tyler Lee in Texas Stadium as QB, just after our Longview Lobos had been beaten in the preceeding game in Nov. 2001.

Was encouraged to hear he chose SMU during recruiting season. I remember he seemed to be mostly an option QB, and knew that might not fit in at SMU who really needs to be a passing team.
Lots of QBs get scholarships on athletic ability
that can be adapted to other positions. Too bad it
didn't work out this time.

Well, I guess he will be playing us, then! The Javelinas of Texas A&M Kingsville. We look forward to playing against him, again.

My family and I am are very excited to hopefully see Mark play QB again. Wish it could have been for SMU. I remember he seemed to be mostly an option QB, and knew that might not fit @ SMU who really needs to be a passing team. As I recall the last game or two... Phillip did more running than passing and everyone got excited about it, with that being said...???... When have you played against Hodges, Javs? :)

someone should tell Mark that life after football would have alot more opprotunities with an SMU degree than a East Central Oklahoma degree
