Let's all attack this DMN letter writer

I saw this in the print edition a week ago, but it has finally made its way online. From the Sunday sports letters to the editor:

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent ... 71780.html
Pony Excess reminded me of the child caught stealing who was very sorry that he got caught, not of the actual act. Did I miss something or did any of the principles ever admit what they did was wrong?

Ron Meyers gave a wink to the famous C-note pinned to the cork board, as did Eric Dickerson with the Trans Am deal. All they wanted to do was blame the NCAA for not catching other schools. The arrogance that these people show for ignorance of right vs. wrong tells me that maybe the death penalty was not enough of a punishment at all.

What did he want to be said in Pony Excess? did he want our players and boosters

to cry and say they were sorry? it has been a hundred years since the D.P. happened

and we have more than paid for our sins and everone else's too, also it would be

impossible to tell the story without saying everone was cheating, beacause that

was why we did cheat.

Letter writer apparently missed the broad acceptance by the SMU family of our responsibilities in the Death Penalty. However in hindsight, it is conceded by most that the sentence was too severe. No school will ever be given such a terminal sentence, as referenced by similar behavior being treated differently (more lightly).

The story is well told and paints those involved very harshly. However on one example, I at least appreciate the lose/lose consequences facing the Trustees, including Governor Clement, if they broke their commitments, i.e. a payroll to meet.

In retrospect, SMU should have stopped all payments and released from any obligation to SMU any player, who felt we were breaking our promise. We would have still lost, but the worst of the consequences and the need/decision to miss a second year voluntarily may have been avoided.

The letter writer didn't get it published.
The DMN did - and they loved it.

Indeed. The DMN is trying to stay afloat like most print publications and they thrive on controversial, one-sided, lack-of-balance letters to the editor like this, and don't worry about who it may hurt or help or whether it's accurate or not - it's an opinion.
