DMN: SMU's Jones addresses Maryland's interest and decision

Postby dcpony » Wed Dec 29, 2010 1:35 pm

SMU coach June Jones said today that Maryland's recent interest in him wasn't the first time he's had talks with representatives from another school this season. And he said it won't be the last while he's at SMU. He said he owes it to himself to listen to other opportunities, but that he was commiitted to his players and growing the program at SMU.

"To be quite honest, I haven't done what I came here to do," Jones said after a news conference in Fort Worth in advance of Thursday's Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl against Army. "The reason that we're competitive already, in the second and third year, is because of..putting the other guy first, making sacrifices and being honest. For me, even if I was a money guy, which I'm not, to go somewhere for the money would compromise everything you've ever told any player that's ever played for you."

"I feel with [athletic director] Steve [Orsini], I feel comfortable with [SMU president] Dr. [Gerald] Turner's commitment. We're making progress in that way. I visualize that all coming together over the next three or four years, yes."

I'm just curious how many of us have actually spoken with people in the athletic department about what kind of capital ventures are under way at SMU.

I recently did. I learned a lot. There are things in the offing, such as the new field turf for Ford. My understanding is that there are going to be some serious discussions/drives (not the Morgan campaign) started in the next couple of months -- especially after the NFC team leaves the campus -- to get projects going. When will they start? I have no idea. But the fund raising aspect drives it.

Instead of talking in circles about this and that, go ask somebody and then "What can I do to help?"

I mentioned it in the other thread that I've come up with an idea that may help in a small way.

Instead of burning energy on this board, just ask yourselves what you are prepared to do? Be proactive, FOR ONCE!

I don't care who the coach is, they say what they want to say to the media. There has to be a reason he talked to Maryland.

Why did Bob Stoops talk to Florida when it came open before Urban Meyer got the job?

Why did Kirk Ferentz talk to the Balitmore Ravens before that job went to Jack Harbaugh?

Why do you talk to potential other employers about other opportunities as opposed to the job you're currently holding?

The bottom line is you never stop looking for a way to better yourself.

I'm all gave out like it or not/ but I will continue to do what I'm doing. And if they ever sell bricks I may buy one of those other than that call Sherwood. Don't care bout a marriage to June he will be gone soon enough. With that money we can get a great replacement when he or we decide it's time to go. Let's win this game tomorrow !

I hope we put a sizable buyout in his extension....but based on our legal work with Doh, I doubt it...

I think of the beer commercial where one guy is hitting on a hot chick and gets brushed off. Next guy brings hot chick a beer and asks hot chick's mother to dance. Hot chick is pleased. If Jones leaves for another coaching job, there will be more than money involved. Maybe his foundation or something not yet in existence, but more than just the money. But the money will be big too.

I don't buy it - if he's "committed to SMU" as he says, why bother.

maryland is a nice enough place but after living there for awhile that was enough for me.
can only spend so much time at the inner harbor. i do love me some crab cakes though.

anyone who doesn't regard what june has done in three years at smu as almost miraculous is...i don't know...i'm dumbfounded. he has done a great job. i hope he is here for the next 20 years.

did any of you guys live through cavan and bennett. now you say anybody can come in here and be competitive. c'mon june made those changes. the guy knows what he is doing. he is transforming smu football.

Then you're naive (sp?) to the process if you really believe that.

Nope, not naive. Just have come to realize you can't trust any coach in Div 1 football, I don't care who they are.

No one is short selling what JJ has done, just saying that the pieces are in place now to continue our success...

Hence, why I said the "process".

Anyone think we havent heard the end of this? Maybe the withdrawing his name, Steinberg's here then gone tweets, then June saying it wasnt the first time all adds up to yeah, he's headed out...but oh shti there's a bowl game Thursday.

Some of what he says sounds like posturing to where he can say "we've left it better than what it started out as..it's not about the money, never will be, but [name the job] is a special place with special people and I feel called to be there."

Don't rest easy on June staying just yet. If he does stay, great...that's my preference. If he doesnt, then let's get someone else in here. I can think of a few that would be capable and I'd like to see should circumstances warrant.
