Mustangs’s Superfan Paul Layne’s Streak Marches On

SMU’s appearance in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl will mark Paul Layne’s 408th consecutive SMU Mustangs football game, home and away.

Why keep up the tradition every year?

Paul Layne: “You’re just like I can’t miss one now, I’ve got this streak going. I had the chicken pox when I was 41. I woke up and I’d never had that before. I went right into the doctor and they said ‘You’ve got the chicken pox!’ and the first thing I did was say ‘Oh my gosh, it’s football season. I’ve got to grab one of the schedules and see.’ Luckily, we had a home game and luckily, I looked at it, and it was Halloween, so I was able to go in costume and sit way on the other side of the stadium, all by myself where no one saw me. I went in costume and it was an afternoon game. So luckily, I just got saved by Halloween. I kind of went as a scarecrow. I had my face all painted up to cover the welts and then I had this straw hat on.”
