I really like the kid, I think he's a winner, but for us to get better, we need more from the QB position. I'm not saying he can't be the guy, but in my mind, there should be an open competition for the starting QB job in the spring.


On another note, how can we get Daryl Fields more playing time?

Move Fields to lb.

Pretty sure that would make us the only school in the country with a LB (Fields) returning kickoffs and an LB (Smith) holding for placekicks.

Go back and listen to Jones post-game comments about Fields and the "younger RBs". He came out and said there's no reason to get them involved unless to spell Zach Line. He also said he was going to look at moving them to other positions to get them involved.

Also - I agree with you about Padron. On paper, he's pretty impressive - but like many have said on this board, the offense completely stalls as it gets close to the redzone. Hawaii used to score 50 points a game - and we just can't seem to finish drives with points. Add to that a defense that is better, but not getting the turnovers you have to have.

Honestly, this program seemed ahead of schedule after last year, even by June's standards - I think he was surprised we did so well and got to the Hawaii Bowl. This year, WE expected more, but truthfully, this team showed how young it was at times. Still on course, but maybe showing the true lack of depth and young.

Next year will be intersting to say the least. Kyle will be pushed by the kid from St. Louis, Zach will be pushed, hopefully, by the stable of RB's we have. The WR's will have to step up the most. O-Line all coming back - nice and big SR class. D-Line is a ?.. and could struggle. DB's - who knows? LB's - should be okay?

Doesn't June always have an open competition at quarterback in the offseason? Kyle is no shoe in to start again next year. It will be exciting to watch this spring with 4 talented QB's fighting for the job.

As if Padron was the only player on the field making any mistakes. why does the O-Line get a pass for its performance on Thursday? The pocket was seriously collapsing on Padron all day long. Padron made a few mistakes under duress, but why would you expect a sophomore qb to play error free when he throws 35+ times a game? If Padron loses the job, which is a ridiculous thought to me, next year will not be a good year.

Padron played poorly against good competition this year. He had great games against Rice, East Carolina (terrible pass defense), etc. but played exceptionally poor against Texas Tech, TCU, UCF, and Army. I like the kid. I think he has earned the right to be the starter next year. But if this offense continues in this fashion the team should make a change.

If we go to a freshman QB next year, we are back to square one on learning June's system. KP is stll learning the complete system and as a result he still has to think too much instead of playing by instinct with the system. Next year as a junior and a full season learning the system this year behind him he should be much much better. Mean while these younger QBs will have a chance to learn the system and be ready to replace KP when he graduates.

why might that be? Maybe because those were the games where the Offensive Line could not hold up against the pressure, even when keeping Zach Line in as a blocker, which by the way gives the qb one less option. Not only that, we have small receivers, which makes it that much harder for a qb to beat the blitz and locate them. I just don't think Padron is our problem against good teams.

Junes offense is too difficult for college ball. No reason an offense should take 3-4 yrs to master. Seriously hinders progress and winning. Padron needs to learn to hit guys in stride and not overthrow everyone all season. Points from the 35 yd line in was pretty bad. Wonder what our red zone efficiency was?

The "still learning the offense" line is pure BS. Go look at my SMU year 3vs Hawaii year 1 thread. Hawaii's offense was rockin' from year 1. The reality is not that they are "learning" in the sense they are studying it, they are "learning" it the same way any team not executing is still learning. We are not executing.

Anyway, we are hardly running the run 'n shoot. We are running a basic offense to limit mistakes/turnovers and feed the ball to Zach Line.

Agree - no more "learning" excuses please. a talented QB can absolutely pick it up in spring enough to get playing time if he is the best option. I think June will have a tough decision personally - for good reasons.

I was down on Pardon after the first half. After getting home and looking at the game on TV I felt better. His percentage ended up pretty good, especially with the balls thrown out of bounds and the drops.

Of the two interceptions, one was a stare down, which can be fixed, the other was the start of the second quarter were there was a significant change in wind affecting the ball. In terms of golf it would have been three of four club difference going from one direction to the other and a football is a lot bigger than a golf ball. I can cut him some slack on that overthrow.

The D line should be a strength as we have all 3 starters coming back...Grenier can rotate in at DE as a formidable alternate and hopefully O Guin will be ready for D1 college football and get some quality reps to spell frazier

Even June Jones says it takes a lot of time to learn his run and shoot system. The reason we are running a basic offense is that we still aren't there yet to fully execute the R&S. So who hasn't mastered it yet...the QB or the receivers? Remember, they both have to be on the same page reading the defense the same way and reacting to it the same way. It is a complex system compared to your basic offense with the receivers running standard routes which is probably why he doesn't rotate in different receivers all the time. Let's see how next year works out as we work new receivers into the system. Hopefully the younger receivers are picking up on the system.
